Three Australians made the trip to the famed Valderrama course for this week’s Spanish Open but with some of the highest scores seen in the game for several seasons none survived to the weekend.

""Just 29 scores bettered par for the entire week with Friday’s second round proving particularly brutal.

Only two players broke par on day two, both shooting 1-under 71, and the cut came at a staggering 9-over after 36 holes.

Scott Hend was the nearest of the Australians to making the weekend but finished three shots outside the cut line after rounds of 81 and 73.

It was the first round that did the damage for the big hitting Queenslander whose second round 73 was actually quite impressive given it was bettered by only 12 players in the field.

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox was the complete opposite to Hend, opening with an impressive 72 to be inside the top-25 but falling victim to Friday’s conditions with an 86.

Wade Ormsby fired rounds of 78 and 80 while Richard Green signed for 75 and 84.

England’s Andrew Johnston was the eventual winner with a 1-over-par total for the week, the first time in 20 years a European Tour event was won with an over par 72-hole total.

Ian Woosnam was the last to achieve the feat at the Scottish Open at Carnoustie in 1996.
