It took 25 years and nine runner-up finishes for Darren Spencer to finally get the taste of victory.
The Club Professional at the Devonport Golf Club took out the Tasmanian PGA Championship at Riverside Golf Club, defeating Scott Laycock in a thrilling three-hole sudden death playoff.
The two players were tied on 2-under par 142 following two rounds of intense competition.
Spencer took control of the tournament in the first round which was played in horrible weather conditions that included strong winds, heavy rain and cold temperatures.
A 3-under par 69 saw him take a three-shot overnight lead over Laycock with Bryce Gorham a further two shots back on 2-over par.
Round 2 was played in better conditions as Laycock chased down Spencer with a 2-under 70 against a 73 for Spencer.
A closing birdie for Laycock sent the tournament into extra-time with the first two holes halved in pars.
On Riverside’s ninth hole, Spencer hit an amazing cut shot from the left trees against the wind to the steeply uphill green to two-feet from the hole.
Laycock’s birdie attempt from 25-feet finished on the lip before Spencer holed his putt to finally capture the title that has eluded him. Bryce Gorham finished in outright third on 148.
