Strange takes stranglehold of Spalding Park Open

Two-time European Tour winner Scott Strange took full advantage of dry morning conditions to open up a five-stroke lead after Round 1 of the Mitchell and Brown Spalding Park Open.

The 36-hole $35,000 Spalding Park Open is one of the most popular stops of the WA swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series but it was all Strange on day one at Spalding Park Golf Club north of Geraldton.

Strange was safely ensconced in the clubhouse when rain began to lash the course in the afternoon, his round of eight-under 64 an unlikely target for those in the later wave.

Simon Houston continued his strong recent form with a round of three-under 69 to be Strange’s closest competitor, Rick Kulacz, Daniel Fox, Ryan Haywood and Haydn Barron all in a share of third after rounds of two-under 70.

But they have ground to make up after Strange took a stranglehold on top spot.

Making the most of the drier morning conditions, Strange began his round with a birdie at the par-5 10th and began to pick up pace with three birdies on the trot from the par-3 14th.

There was a slight stumble with a bogey at the par-3 fourth but he answered in emphatic fashion, finishing his round with five consecutive birdies to end the day at eight-under.

The second round commences at 7.30am on Saturday with the overnight leaders teeing off from 11am.

The cold conditions couldn’t quell the hot scoring of pro-am plunderer Tim Hart as the Queenslander claimed the Middlemount Pro-Am at Middlemount Golf Club.

Continuing on from the good adidas PGA Pro-Am Series form that won him the Moranbah Pro-Am two days earlier, Hart defied the morning chill to post eight-under 64, good enough for a one-stroke victory.

The win extends Hart’s advantage in the Onsite Rental Group Mining Town Series to eight shots as he seeks to defend his series win from last year.

“It was a very fresh morning with cool winds,” said Hart. “I made sure I got my proper warm-up beforehand.”

“With the body feeling good I was comfortable to be able to hit driver hard and take advantage where I could.”

Peter Martin staged a stirring defence of his Middlemount title but ultimately came up one shot short.

Needing to eagle his final hole – the par-5 first – to match Hart’s score, Martin had to settle for a birdie and outright second at seven-under par, two shots clear of Shae Wools-Cobb and Tom Power Horan.

Through two events Hart is now at 22-under par for the Mining Towns Series followed by Wools-Cobb (14-under) and Power Horan (12-under).

The next event for the Onsite Mining Towns Series is the 36-hole Tieri Pro-Am to be held this weekend.

A second round of eight-under 64 has secured Tim Hart a second straight win at the Moranbah Mini Earthmovers Pro-Am at Moranbah Golf Club.

Trailing Harrison Wills by just one stroke after day one, Hart unleashed a birdie barrage to take command of the tournament.

After starting with two pars from the second tee, Hart rattled off four birdies in the space of five holes as Wills stumbled with a bogey at the par-5 second for the second day in succession.

With a lone gear of flat out attack, Hart added further birdies at 10 and 15, putting the exclamation point on his four-stroke victory with an eagle at the par-5 16th.

Hart’s total of 14-under par was four clear of Wills (69) and New South Welshman Brendan Smith (64) with Shae Wools Cobb (68) and Tom Power Horan (69) rounding out the top five.

It is Hart’s second win of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series season but his first outright win of the year on a course that is proving to be very good to him.

“The course condition is probably the best I’ve seen here,” said Hart.

“Every year it’s great coming back and even better to have some good scores.

“I clearly enjoy playing here. You are able to get away with a couple shots and I like how the greens roll.”

Adam Henwood was the highlight round of the morning shooting an impressive six-under par 66, the only player in red figures in the morning wave.

The Moranbah Pro-Am served as the opening event of the Onsite Mining Town Series which will continue at the Middlemount Pro-Am at Middlemount Golf Club on Wednesday.

A birdie on the penultimate hole has secured Braden Becker a third victory on the WA swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series, taking out the South West Isuzu South West Open by two strokes.

One of the most popular stops on the Pro-Am circuit at the picturesque Bunbury Golf Club layout, Becker (70) began day two with the lead but endured a roller-coaster final round on his way to victory.

Two early birdies extended his lead over Simon Hawkes (71) to three shots through four holes of the second round but a lost ball from the tee at six resulted in a double-bogey and a one-shot margin.

The WA Open champion and winner at Cottesloe and Capel responded immediately with a birdie at the par-5 seventh and then made a miraculous birdie from under a tree on nine to make the turn at nine-under par and three shots clear.

A further birdie on the short par-3 10th saw Becker’s lead blow out to four shots but again there would be a twist in the tale.

A recent winner of the Air Adventure King Island Pro-Am, Hawkes had been patient with 13 straight pars to start his second round before applying some timely pressure.

As Becker dropped a shot at 13 Hawkes clawed another one back with his first birdie of the day at the par-4 14th.

A second birdie and Becker’s bogey at 15 resulted in a two-shot swing and suddenly a tie at the top of the leaderboard.

An untimely bogey from Hawkes at the par-3 16th gave Becker the lead once again and when Becker followed with a birdie on the 17th, a closing par was all that was required to finish two shots clear of Hawkes at nine-under par.

Victorian Andrew Kelly (70) took solo third at six-under par with New South Welshman Alex Edge continuing his solid form to finish fourth at five-under.

Kathryn Norris shared low amateur honours with Simon Liddell at the South West Open.

The medal for low amateur was a tie with Kathryn Norris and Simon Liddell both finishing fifth at three-under for the tournament alongside WA’s Haydn Barron and Joseph Ha, Norris tying the women’s course record with a second round of five-under 67.

When both amateur players couldn’t be separated after two playoff holes, failing light halted proceedings and dual winners were crowned.

This concludes the south-west swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series in WA, with players heading to Geraldton next week for the time-honoured Spalding Park Open.

WA Open champion Braden Becker is once again the man to beat after edging one stroke clear on day one of the South West Open at Bunbury Golf Club.

An annual highlight of the WA swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series, the South West Isuzu South West Open once again attracted a high-quality field but it was Becker again who ended the day on the top of the leaderboard.

Victorious at Cottesloe and Capel in recent weeks, it only took Becker three holes to register his first birdie of the day, backing it up with two more at four and five on his way to a front nine of five-under 31.

A bogey at the short par-3 10th was a slight stumble but further birdies at 11 and 14 and an eagle at the par-5 17th were enough to put Becker in front by day’s end.

Recent winner of the Air Adventure King Island Pro-Am Simon Hawkes is outright second following an impressive opening round of six-under 66, two shots clear of New South Welshman Alex Edge and Victorian Andrew Kelly.

WA amateurs Adam Baillie and Joseph Owen are fifth and sixth respectively but it will take something special to rein in Becker who will tee off alongside Hawkes at 12.05pm AWST.

Harrison Wills is channelling his inner Cameron Smith as he takes a one-stroke lead into day two of the Moranbah Mini Earthmovers Pro-Am.

The first event in the 2022 Onsite Rental Group Mining Town Series and continuation of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series, the Moranbah Golf Club layout two hours west of Mackay was presented in great condition and the clear skies made it perfect for scoring.

William Bruyeres set the tone in the morning wave with a bogey-free round of six-under 66 but a stunning stretch of holes following a shaky start saw Wills take command of the championship by day’s end.

A double bogey on his fourth hole of the day – the par-4 eighth – erased the progress he had made with birdies at six and seven but it would prove to be a minor blip.

He made six birdies in the space of seven holes from the 10th hole, closing with his ninth and 10th birdies of the day at three and four to edge one shot clear of Bruyeres and Tim Hart ahead of Sunday’s final round.

“It happened to click at the right time, ball striking was solid and holed a few putts,” said Wills, who is undertaking the PGA Membership Pathway Program under the watchful eye of Richard Woodhouse at KDV Sport on the Gold Coast.

“I really think I found the groove with my fresh mullet on display,” he added.

Shae Wools-Cobb (67) is two strokes off the lead in outright fourth position followed by Zach Kelly and former Gippsland Super 6 champion Tom Power Horan who both posted rounds of four-under 68 on day one.

The final round of the Moranbah Mini Earthmovers Pro-Am tees off at 7.30am on Sunday with the leading groups to start at 12.30pm.

A hole-out eagle from 118 metres at his final hole has delivered Andrew Kelly a two-stroke victory at the Urban Quarter Dunsborough Lakes Pro-Am at Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club.

The picturesque Margaret River region south of Perth threw all manner of weather at the 32 players contesting the latest leg of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series in Western Australia but it was Kelly’s finish that had the greatest impact.

Starting from the 10th tee, Kelly incredibly had eagles at 13 and 15 but it was his third at the 354-metre par-4 ninth that earned victory and set a new course record in the process.

Kelly’s eight-under 64 was two shots better than South West local Correy Price who had an eagle and seven birdies in his round of six-under 66, leading the field for almost the entire day prior to Kelly’s last-hole heroics.

A day after his Capel Pro-Am victory, Braden Becker found himself three-over through four holes but eagles at eight and one helped to turn things around as he finished at five-under 67 and outright third position.

One of the highlights of the Dunsborough Lakes Pro-Am is the shootout that takes place at the end of play.

With $1,000 on the line, players attempt to hit the boat that is moored in the centre of the lake. No player was able to bounce their ball off the boat, Secret Harbour Professional Dale Howie taking the cash in the three-man nearest-the-boat challenge.

The next event on the WA swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am series is the prestigious South West Open at Bunbury Golf Club this weekend.

Six birdies in the space of seven holes has delivered WA Open champion Braden Becker a second victory on the Western Australian swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series.

The champion at Cottesloe a week ago, Becker extended his outstanding summer form to shoot eight-under 64 at Capel Golf Club for a four-stroke victory at the Jetline Kerbing Capel Pro-Am.

The field of 32 professionals were greeted with perfect conditions on the first day of winter but no one ran hotter than Becker.

Starting from the 10th tee, Becker opened with two birdies on the trot before adding another at the par-4 16th to make the turn in three-under.

He parred the par-4 first before making light work of the front nine, his seven-hole birdie blitz interrupted only by a bogey at the par-4 fourth, his only dropped shot of the day.

It gave Becker a four-shot win over Kwinana Pro-Am victor Brady Watt (68) with Andrew Crabb, Alex Edge, Simon Houston and Simon Hawkes all sharing third spot with rounds of two-under 70.

Next event on the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series schedule through WA is the Urban Quarter Dunsborough Lakes Pro-Am on Thursday.

Two early bogeys couldn’t curtail Rick Kulacz from launching a come-from-behind victory at the $25,000 Wembley Pro-Am in Perth.

A two-time winner on the Asian Tour, Kulacz shot five-under 67 in his second round on Sunday for a 36-hole total of 11-under, enough for a one-stroke win from Scott Strange (70) with Brett Rumford (68) and Josh Herrero (70) a shot further back in a tie for third.

When overnight leader Strange dropped two shots in his outward nine it was Herrero who looked set to grab the title as he moved to 11-under through 11 holes.

However, he stumbled with three bogeys in his next six holes to finish at nine-under alongside Rumford.

Kulacz’s stumble came early in his round but he recovered in spectacular fashion.

Chasing his first adidas PGA Pro-Am Series win of the year, Kulacz began to right the ship with a birdie at the par-5 11th, the first of six in the space of just nine holes as he rose to the top at Wembley’s Open Course.

In trickier conditions and cooler temperature it was Joseph Ha and Haydn Barron who finished tied for fifth at eight-under with the trio of Kim Felton, Brody Martin and Braden Becker two shots further back at six-under.

This was the first event at Wembley to be played with a Junior Pro-Am on the Saturday followed by a Corporate Pro-Am on the Sunday and the success of this year’s event promises to provide a strong foundation for 2023 and beyond.

The WA swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series now heads to the state’s south-west on Wednesday for the Jetline Kerbing Capel Pro-Am at Capel Golf Club.

Brett Rankin has completed a dominant display through the Hidden Valley Whitsundays North Queensland Series with a share of victory at the Abbot Point Operations Bowen Pro-Am.

Bowen Golf Club served as the final stop in the North Queensland swing but there was no catching Rankin who finished with a share of top spot for the third time in four events and was second in the fourth.

He didn’t have it all his own way at Bowen, his round of five-under 65 matched by Tim Hart and Anthony Choat who all finished one shot clear of New South Welshman Andrew Campbell (66).

The Bowen layout was presented in fabulous condition and Sunday’s spectacular weather made it perfect for scoring, 14 of the 25 professionals in the field finishing in red numbers.

Rankin entered the Bowen Pro-Am with a nine-stroke lead in the North Queensland Series yet it was something of a shaky start.

Starting from the ninth tee, Rankin opened with a par but after dropping a shot at the par-4 10th bounced back with a birdie blitz, making six in the space of seven holes to ascend the leaderboard in rapid fashion.

He would make birdies at three of his final holes to match the scores of Hart and Choat and take the lion’s share of the $10,000 prize pool as a 12-shot winner of the North Queensland Series at 34-under par.

Hart was second to Rankin in the series but was thrilled to finish so strongly at Bowen.

“I was on such a good roll, hit some great irons and rolled putts in when I needed it,” said Hart, who had five birdies in succession in a back nine of 29.

Choat also made inroads on the back nine, going five-under including a chip-in eagle at the par-5 17th.

“I was lucky enough to chip that in,” said Choat, who also chipped in on his final hole, the par-3 third.

“I was greenside for two and my playing partner had a similar chip. I ended up holing mine with the flag out.”

The next Queensland event on the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series is the two-day Moranbah Mini Earthmovers Pro-Am starting Saturday, June 4.

This also serves as the start of the Onsite Rental Group Mining Town Series.
