Senior wins Australian PGA Seniors title

Peter Senior has claimed the Australian PGA Seniors Championship by one stroke in a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Richmond Golf Club.

Senior began the final round one shot behind overnight leaders Peter Lonard, Peter Fowler and reigning champion Michael Long but was able to remain composed in hot New South Wales conditions.

Five players see-sawed up and down the leaderboard across the final nine holes however birdies on holes 16 and 18 gave Senior a one-shot clubhouse lead.

Needing a birdie on the final hole to force a play-off, Peter Fowler’s drive found the greenside trap and when he failed to get up and down, the title and trophy belonged to Senior.

“I’ve been close on a couple of occasions and to win against the calibre of this field is amazing,” Senior said.

Senior’s final round of 5-under 65 was one of the best of the day to elevate the Queenslander to a winning total of 9-under par.

A winner of 23 ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia events, including two Australian PGA Championships, Senior is cemented as one of Australia’s golfing greats, a perennial crowd favourite and genuine nice guy.

“I still enjoy playing but I like to give back playing on the Legends, playing here at Richmond has been really fun,” he said.

“The guys on this tour are great and we have some fantastic tournaments.”

A final round of 5-under 65 catapulted Peter O’Malley up the leaderboard for a second place finish in the Ladbrokes Legends Tour tournament alongside Peter Fowler who held the lead of the championship with nine holes remaining.

Michael Long and Peter Lonard rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth place at 7-under the card.

In its fifth staging at Richmond Golf Club, the Australian PGA Seniors Championship is building momentum with the professional field growing in profile each year while local exposure continues to amplify.

“These tournaments really are something special, with spectators walking shoulder to shoulder with some of Australia’s golfing greats, it is an experience not to be missed,” explained David Barker, Senior State Manager of the PGA of Australia.

The Ladbrokes Legends Tour continues with a run of Sydney based tournaments this month with the next event commencing at Roseville Golf Club on Friday 8 November.

The 2018 Emirates Australian Open champion Abraham Ancer will defend his crown at The Australian Golf Club next month.

Ancer, who thrilled Sydney crowds last year in becoming the first Mexican winner of the Stonehaven Cup, used his victory to kickstart a charge into the world top 50 and, subsequently, his first Presidents Cup team.

“Sydney is such an important place for me with so many good memories from last year and the doors it helped open up,” said Ancer, who then went on to team with Roberto Diaz the following week as Mexico shared second at the Melbourne World Cup of Golf.

“I can’t wait to get back Down Under and play in front of the fans who were so supportive and to see if we can recreate a bit of that Stonehaven magic with such a great field coming to Sydney in December.”

That field – already stacked with such names as Scott, Day, Leishman, Smith, Oosthuizen, Garcia, Casey, Pan and Els among others already confirmed – will be further boosted with some other greats of global golf for the 5-8 December championship.

As captain Ernie Els assembles as many of his International squad as possible before the following week’s Presidents Cup, several of his assistants will join the chase for the 104th Australian Open.

Alongside former champion Geoff Ogilvy, the ever-popular K.J. Choi and former Masters hero Mike Weir will all cast an eye on their charges from within the powerhouse field.

Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt was thrilled with all the additions, but particularly with Ancer’s signature.

“Abraham, like Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth before him, played some golf in Australia last year that not only opened our eyes to his immense talents, but also propelled him up the world golf ladder,” Pitt said.

“The shots he played in some testing conditions last year were next level – and that’s exactly where his world ranking has gone as a result.

“He was much loved by the crowd and interacted generously with them, so we can’t wait to have him back on our shores.

“Geoff has made no secret of his love for the Stonehaven Cup and has been one of our most ardent supporters over the years, so it’s good to have him back in the swing.

“But to have K.J. and Mike back alongside him is something I’m sure all fans who attend The Australian will really love … they’ve both achieved so much in the game.”

The Emirates Australian Open is supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

The tournament, hosted by The Australian for a record 21st time, will be telecast exclusively live across the screens of Channel 7 and 7Plus from midday (AEDT) each day.

The Emirates Australian Open is a flagship tournament on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia. The winner will receive a minimum of 32 Official World Golf Ranking points.

Tickets are now on sale. Visit www.ticketek.com and search “Open golf” to make sure you don’t miss seeing the world’s best golfers live in Sydney.

The stakes have never been higher for Geoff Ogilvy, Marcus Fraser and Brendon Goddard than what they’ll face at next week’s Gippsland Super 6 tournament.

Friendly mid-week rounds are commonplace for the trio but when they grace the fairways of Yallourn Golf Club from 7-10 November the level of competition will be taken to new heights.

Joining the field of an ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament for the first time, Goddard will face the big time alongside two of Australia’s top golfing exports.

“It’s pretty casual but it’s very competitive,” Ogilvy said of their mid-week jaunts.

“Obviously Frase and I have played golf for a very long time competitively but BJ (Goddard) is probably more competitive than all of us. He takes it very seriously.”

Goddard, a former AFL player for the St Kilda and Essendon football clubs, is well accustomed to playing sport at the highest level but insists this will be unlike anything he has done before.

“I’m hoping not to embarrass myself but also hoping deep down that I make the weekend or if I beat one of these two blokes I’ll be pretty happy as well,” Goddard said.

The innovative tournament format will see a field of 132 PGA Professionals and amateurs compete across three rounds of regular stroke play, as they endeavour to qualify for a dramatic fourth and final round.

The top 24 players will then compete across a six-hole medal (stroke) match play shootout to determine a champion on the final day.

Providing an exciting point of difference for players and spectators alike, Fraser – a three-time European Tour winner – hopes the Super 6 format will entice the Gippsland and Yallourn locals to support Australia’s golfing talent.

“It’s huge for the Gippsland area. Hopefully all of the locals get out there and around the tournament,” Fraser said.

Goddard, a Gippsland local originally from Glengarry, believes the tournament will be of great benefit to the community.

“It’s great that the PGA saw an opportunity there and has given it to Gippsland and the town of Yallourn,” Goddard said.

“If you’re in the area I encourage you to get down there because it’s not every day that you get to see golfers as up close as what you can at Yallourn and walk the fairways and be literally a couple of meters from these guys playing golf.”

Australia’s 2006 U.S. Open winner Ogilvy hopes the match play format will be to his advantage if he is able to make it to the top 24.

“It’s a pretty cool concept but match play is a tough format. Across six holes, everyone’s in a small little loop,” Ogilvy said.

“You get lots of action and lots of matches in a day. I love match play so hopefully over six holes I do alright.”

In order to have his name engraved as the first on the Gippsland Super 6 trophy, Ogilvy will need to overcome an in-form Marcus Fraser who recorded a runner-up finish at last week’s Victorian PGA Championship.

A number of Australians competing overseas will venture home for the tournament including three-time China Tour winner Maverick Antcliff, while recent Australasian Tour victors Campbell Rawson and Darren Beck will also feature.

The 132-man field will compete for the winner’s share of the $125,000 prize purse from 7-10 November at Yallourn Golf Club. Entry is free to the public.

The winner of the Gippsland Super 6 will also receive World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2020 season, including a place in the field at the 2019 Australian PGA Championship.

Be patient and hang in there for as long as you can.

This is Aaron Pike’s advice for those competing in the Victorian PGA Championship at RACV Cape Schanck Resort from 24-27 October.

The reigning champion, who won the 2018 tournament by one stroke in a down-to-the-wire finish, is adamant that the player who hedges his bets and plays smart on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula course is the most likely to claim the Jack Harris trophy.

For the 92 professionals teeing it up this week, Pike’s warning is one that should be heeded by all.

“I said it last year right from the outset. I played the practise round earlier in the week and turned to the boys and said, ‘it’s probably not going to be who plays the best round on this golf course that wins, it’s going to be the guy who is the most patient and who hangs in there the longest’,” Pike said.

“My only advice to anyone this year is exactly that again, it’s whoever is going to hang in there the longest.

“This place is difficult, it’s going to beat you up, the wind is going to get you. You’re not going to be perfect but you’ve just got to know that going into it. Otherwise, this place can get the better of you.”

Known for its undulating fairways, stunning views and rugged landscape, the par-70 Cape Schanck layout provides a test for all golfers.

Simple strategy was the key to Pike’s victory last year and is one he will apply yet again in 2019.

“Sunday was brutal playing this tournament last year,” he said.

“There was wind going everywhere, guys were having big numbers on holes, leads were changing and I didn’t really let any of that affect me, I just kept plugging away.

“By the end of it I walked up to Michael Sim on the last and said ‘what have I got to do’ and he said you’ve got to get up and down.

“So I hit it stiff and got up and down and won the hole so realistically it won the tournament.”

Set on the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, the course is susceptible to fierce winds and heavy rain, both of which are expected to hit the course in the tournament’s final three rounds.

The conditions will also prove a test for the 81 amateurs competing in pairs with professionals in the Victorian PGA Celebrity Amateur Challenge.

Setting a strong lead in warm, sunny conditions in Thursday’s opening round will be an important task when the teams combine for the 4 Ball Best Ball pro-am format, in which the top 25 teams will advance to Saturday’s third round and the top-eight advance to the final round on Sunday.

While looking to improve his mindset on the course, Pike believes the pro-am style could be to his advantage.

“I’ve always played quite well in this kind of format, I think it’s something that sits well with me and might relax me a bit more,” he said.

“I can joke around and have a bit of a chat with whoever I’m playing with, take my mind off things and maybe help them and give them a few tips.”

Celebrities competing in the challenge include tennis star Sam Groth, AFL legends Michael Roberts, Ryan Schoenmakers, Luke Breust, Dale Thomas, cricketer Damien Fleming and Australian TV personalities Scott McGregor, Keith Schleiger and Jesse Raeburn.

The winner of the 2019 Victorian PGA Championship will receive the lion’s share of the $125,000 prize purse as well as Official World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2020 season, including a place in the Australian PGA Championship field.

The final two rounds of the Victorian PGA Championship will be live-streamed on PGATV from 1pm AEDT on Saturday 26 October and 12pm AEST on Sunday 27 December.

Something has finally clicked for Michael Sim.

The former PGA TOUR player has honed his skills in practice and successfully translated them to the cutthroat pressure of a tournament setting, stringing together highly compelling performances in consecutive tournaments.

Fresh from winning the Nexus Risk WA Open on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series and a third-place at the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA, Sim enters this week’s Victorian PGA Championship with the confidence that makes him a red hot contender.

In the tournament’s second staging at RACV Cape Schanck Resort on the Mornington Peninsula, the 34-year-old will aim to take advantage of the momentum in his favour.

“I haven’t played too much this year. Last week (WA Open) would have been my fifth tournament so it’s great to see the work I’ve been doing at home, work on the course,” Sim said.

“I’ve been working pretty hard and shooting some good numbers so it was nice to head to Kalgoorlie and have the game feel similar to when I was playing at home.

“I had set goals in the last two weeks to get into contention and I managed to do that. If I can get into contention and give myself another shot on Sunday I’d be very pleased with that.”

Building on a talent base that saw the 2017 Queensland Open champion win multiple tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2009, Sim believes his best golf is within reach following recent results, but maintains the challenges of the Cape Schanck layout will prove the biggest test.

“For me if I drive the ball well more so with accuracy rather than length. I’m not as long as some of the other guys out on tour, but if I can get the ball on the fairway and putt well, which I’ve done well for the last two weeks, it seems to set up my scoring really,” he said.

“Definitely in Kalgoorlie I drove it really straight and that gave me a lot of opportunities and last week was similar. There were plenty of birdies out there at Cottesloe and obviously at Cape Schanck this week, it all sort of revolves around the weather really.

“If it’s pretty calm you’ll see some low scoring and if the wind gets up it’ll play pretty tough.”

Yet another top-10 result would be of benefit for Sim’s Tour of Australasia Order of Merit standings as scheduling conflicts with overseas tour schools arise.

“I actually wasn’t supposed to play this week due to clashes with Japanese Q-School but I didn’t get my course preference so it means I’m going up on the 10th of November for the third stage,” he said.

“It’s looking like I’ll miss the Gippsland Super 6 tournament and the final stage clashes with the Australian Open so at this stage it’s likely I’ll miss two events coming up.

“That’s why I felt playing really well at Kalgoorlie has taken a bit of pressure off keeping my card. I think I was running about 50th and it has pushed me up to about 35th.”

On his quest for a second win on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, Sim will have to overcome a star-studded field, including former Olympian Marcus Fraser, PGA TOUR legend Nick O’Hern, 2019 New Zealand Open champion Zach Murray and recent Asian Tour winner Andrew Dodt.

A field of 92 professionals will tee it up at the Victorian PGA Championship at RACV Cape Schanck Resort from 24-27 October 2019.

Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series Order of Merit leader Tim Hart, Matthew Buff, Jason Kraan Ruben Lal, Tom Horan and Blake Collyer all earned a place in the field following Monday’s pre-qualifying.

Collyer fired an incredible 61, ear-marking him a big smokey at Thursday’s tournament.

In addition to the winner’s share of the $125,000 prize purse, the champion will receive Official World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2020 season.

The final two rounds of the Victorian PGA Championship will be live-streamed on PGATV from 12pm AEDT on Saturday 26 October and 11am AEDT on Sunday 27 December.

Two-time PGA TOUR winner Cameron Champ hopes to finish his season on a high after announcing he’ll take part in the Australian PGA Championship.

Champ, the longest hitter in professional golf, will compete in his first tournament down under at the #AusPGA at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast on 19-22 December.

Champ joins a world-class field that features back-to-back champion Cameron Smith and former world no.1 Adam Scott.

The 24-year-old Californian star says he’s elated to take part in one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.

“I can’t wait to head to the Gold Coast and finish the year playing against some of the world’s best,” Champ said.

“I’m sure there will be lots of local hype after the Presidents Cup and I’ve heard great things about the golf course, as well as the fun atmosphere surrounding the event. I am really looking forward to trying to win the tournament.”

Champ, ranked no.71 in the world, is regarded as one of the PGA TOUR’s brightest prospects, with his long-ball driver a popular drawcard with fans.

PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman said Champ’s participation at the PGA Champs strengthens what’s set to be one of Australia’s strongest ever summers of golf.

“Cameron Champ is a shooting star of the PGA TOUR. His booming drives will be a key feature of the fun of the Australian PGA Championship,” Mr Kirkman said.

“I can’t wait to see him strike the ball from the first tee at RACV Royal Pines Resort. There’s no doubt he’ll be a crowd-puller and add to the festival atmosphere that we’ve developed at the PGA Champs.

“Champ’s participation in our event punctuates what’s going to be an incredible summer of golf. It follows a star-studded Australian Open field and excitement around the Presidents Cup. Golf is set to be the sport of the season.”

Few players have made as big an impact as Champ in his first two seasons on the TOUR.

Champ last month won the Safeway Open in an emotion-charged performance. It follows his life-changing victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship last October.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the inclusion of Champ enhanced the world-class reputation of the Australian PGA Championship.

“Cameron has just won on the PGA TOUR and is one of the rising stars of world golf, so to secure him for the Gold Coast is a huge coup and further strengthens what is already a world-class field,” she said.

“The Australian PGA Championship is renowned around the world for attracting the world’s best players and this year’s event will be no different, so I encourage as many people as possible to get out and see the players in action.”

The Texas A&M graduate will have to overcome local heroes Smith and Scott to return home with the Joe Kirkwood Cup – Australia’s oldest pro golf trophy.

Smith is hoping to create history by becoming the first person in more than 100 years to win three consecutive Australian PGA Championship titles.

The Australian PGA Championship is a week-long festival of golf, with plenty of action-packed, family-friendly activities to entertain fans beyond the ropes.

The famous Gold Coast beaches will again be brought to the greens, with the Oakley Gold Coast Beach Club taking centre stage at the lucrative 16th hole, the home of the Soniq Million Dollar Hole (SMDH).

The SMDH is moving to Saturday this year where a group of lucky fans will have the opportunity to try their luck at hitting a hole-in-one on the par-3 hole to win $1 million.

The players will be competing for AU$1.5 million in prizemoney, and as the Australian PGA Championship continues to co-sanction with the European Tour, players have the opportunity to earn valuable world ranking points early in the 2019/2020 season.

Channel 7 is the exclusive domestic broadcast partner of the Australian PGA Championship.

The Australian PGA Championship is one of the PGA of Australia’s flagship events co-sanctioned by the European Tour and ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

General admission to the Australian PGA Championship is $25. Children (aged 16 and under) get in free with a paying adult.

Darren Beck will bring a hot putter and increased confidence to this week’s Nexus Risk WA Open as he aims to claim two wins in the west.

An incredible back-nine featuring six birdies propelled Beck into the lead of last week’s TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship and it is this form that the Sydneysider will be hoping to continue at Cottesloe Golf Club from Thursday.

“I’ve played many Cottesloe Open’s around here and love the course,” Beck said.

“Wind can be a factor here so will have to have great control of your of your golf ball.”

Now after adding a second state PGA Championship to his name Beck will look to add a maiden state Open title to his resume.

“All state Open’s have so much history around them and it would be great to add my name to the long list of great champions this week.”

European Tour and former WA Open winner Brett Rumford will contest one of his favourite events of the year on the back of a solid result in Kalgoorlie.

Tied 14th after some serious travel to make the event, the West Australian is in good stead for this week knowing he’ll be sleeping in his own bed.

Local WA talents Jarryd Felton and Michael Sim both played exceptional golf last week to finish second and third respectively and will no doubt be around the top of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.

Past winners Daniel Fox, Oliver Goss and James Nitties should also not be discounted.

Featuring on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series in 2019, a field of 120 players will vie for their share in the $100,000 prize purse across the four-round tournament.

Players looking to boost their state Order of Merit (OOM) standings or close the gap to National OOM leader Tim Hart will have the opportunity to do so this week with the winner set to take away close to $18,000.

History has shown amateurs love winning this event with 29 claiming victory since the first Open in 1913 and three in the last seven years – Oliver Goss (2102) Curtis Luck (2016) and Zach Murray (2018).

Forty elite amateurs will tee it up at Cottesloe and with a stellar amateur field assembled including Hayden Hopewell, Josh Greer, Haydn Barron and recently crowned US Mid-Amateur Champion Lukas Michel, there’s a great chance it could happen again.

The WA Open has plenty to offer both on and off the course but for professionals an extra incentive will be offered on the back-nine.

Should any professional ace the par-3 11th on Sunday they’ll be the lucky winner of a brand new Volvo XC40 valued at $67,000.

Play starts this Thursday 17 October with players hitting the course from 6.50am. Don’t forget to keep up to date with all the action through live scoring on the PGA of Australia app or www.pga.org.au.

A remarkable back-nine resurgence has seen Darren Beck win the 2019 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.

Beck arrested a disastrous opening that had him 3-over the card by the fifth hole at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.

But six birdies on the back-nine, including three in a row from holes 16 to 18, helped the 41-year-old secure his first ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia victory since 2008.

“It feels great. It was a little nerve-wracking five or six holes in,” Beck said.

“There was a big change in scores. I birdied the 12th (hole) and Felts (Jarryd Felton) bogeyed so it quickly turned round. I thought I was playing for second for a while there.

“It just feels good to keep it together and finish the way I did. The putter was just unbelievable so I can’t explain how good that felt.”

Beck experienced a radical transformation on the back-nine. After scoring a front-nine 39 – 3-over par – the New South Welshman came to life with a remarkable 6-under 30 on the final nine holes.

He finished the day 3-under the card with rounds of 68, 67, 68 and 69 for a tournament total of 272 – two shots clear of second-placed Jarryd Felton.

“I think it was hard early in the round because we couldn’t see any leaderboards and it’s hard to know what’s going on. You don’t know whether guys have come up from behind and shot a good score,” he said.

“I had to ask a couple of people what the scores were just to make sure and then I could just play my own game without trying to push it.

“On the last, I didn’t want to push too much once I got to a two-shot lead. I just played a three-shotter to try and make a birdie. It’s a great feeling.”

The two-horse race between Beck and Felton was enthralling. Felton returned to the lead early on the front-nine and dashed out to a three-shot lead at the turn.

But Beck seized on Felton’s bogeys on the 12th and 13th to win his first major crown since the 2009 Brunei Open on the Asian Tour.

Felton said he was pleased with his 14-under performance despite feeling he let an opportunity slip.

“It feels good and you’d take second place at the start of the week but I don’t know how many in front I got there at one point,” Felton said.

“I felt like I had a pretty decent lead but I think Darren had about eight putts on the final nine holes and there’s nothing I could do about that.

“He finished with 6-under for that nine and I shot square but the end result is what it is.

“It shows that my game’s not too far away. It would have been good to get a win but you can do it on these and hopefully get a win at the end of the year.”

Beck and Felton will now go on to play next week’s WA Open at Cottesloe Golf Club on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series before competing again on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia at the 2019 Victorian PGA Championship.

The win sees Beck receive World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of 2020.

Former PGA TOUR player Michael Sim secured third place thanks to a final round of 67 and a tournament total of 12-under.

Young-gun Robert Hogan finished fourth at 11-under to secure his best-ever professional result, while Blake Proverbs’ fourth-round 66 shot him into the top five at 10-under.

A front-nine surge has helped Darren Beck to a one-shot lead in the penultimate round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.

Back-to-back birdies saw Beck cut down Jarryd Felton’s three-stoke overnight lead to finish with a round of 4-under 68 – equal best of the day.

“It was good today. It was a bit better ball-striking wise and I holed some nice putts early,” Beck said.

“I gave myself a lot of chances with birdie putts and managed to sneak a couple in on 14 and 15 so I had two good birdies there.

“I haven’t been in this position for a while especially in a tier-two event. It’s great to be in this position and I feel good so I’ll just see what I can do tomorrow.”

Felton relinquished a handy lead following an even-par round of 72. He was one-over through nine holes yet consecutive birdies looked like he had arrested his slump.

But the Perth local faltered with a bogey on 14 to take his total back to 12-under.

“Today was a grind. It was really hard out here, but you can’t be upset with even-par. I’m still in the tournament and am looking forward to tomorrow,” Felton said.

“I’m only one back and as Darren showed, it can all change very quickly. I’m enjoying it out there so we’ll just see what happens.”

Six birdies for Stephen Dartnall helped move the West Australian to third, following a standout 4-under 68 for a 10-under total.

Dartnall, the 2016 WA PGA champion, says a lapse in time spent on the course has surprisingly been beneficial to his performance.

“I haven’t played a lot of golf, let alone social golf. Not relying on golf as an income has let me play with little pressure,” Dartnall said.

“It’s a cliche but I’m playing it one shot at a time.”

Robert Hogan sits in outright fourth place following a steady round of 2-under 70 for a three-round total of 9-under the card, one shot ahead of fellow New South Welshman Jordan Zunic at 8-under.

Experienced campaigner Michael Sim and recently-turned pro Justin Warren remain in contention at 7-under the card in sixth place.

The fourth and final round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship begins at 7:25am AWST at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.

The final round of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament will be live streamed on PGA TV from 10am AWST on Sunday 13 October.

Jarryd Felton has extended his lead at the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship following a standout second round.

The West Australian holds a three-shot lead heading into moving day after a 5-under 65 performance that took him to the pinnacle of the #WAPGA leaderboard.

Winds once again made for challenging conditions on the exposed fairways of Kalgoorlie Golf Course’s front-nine but it was here that Felton’s game came to life.

“It’s a reward for good play today,” Felton said.

“It got pretty windy out there over the last nine holes but that’s when I got off to a great start on that front-nine.

“Five birdies in a row from 18 through to four really kick-started the round. Before that I was just kind of plodding along at 1-under at the time but I caught fire on that front-nine.”

The 2017 NZ PGA Championship and 2015 NSW PGA Championship victor knows what it takes to win on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia but insists tomorrow’s 18 holes could be make or break.

“I’ve been in this position before and hopefully I can bring back good memories from the last couple of times I’ve won.

“It’s good to be in the mix again, especially around a course I love and playing well so it’s a good feeling.

“Staying patient with what I can and just hitting quality golf shots will be important. You hit a lot of good golf shots out here that don’t get rewarded and you hit it to some spots that you’ve just got to take your medicine.

“I think I’ve been doing that pretty well so hopefully I can do that on the weekend.”

A hot streak of three straight birdies and an eagle for a round of 5-under elevated Darren Beck to second place on the WA PGA leaderboard after teeing off in the morning of round two.

His early round form from holes one to three went to another level on the 11th but it was the Sydneysider’s putting that had the biggest impact.

“I got off to a good start today so kept the momentum there from yesterday and overall I just played pretty solid.”

“I was just getting around the best I could but I holed some really good putts like 30-footers and 40-footers.”

Two consistent rounds of 68 have seen 24-year-old Justin Warren rocket to contention and hold outright third place ahead of round three.

The recently-turned professional rose to the level of competition, striking an 8-under total.

Overnight joint leader Jordan Zunic remains at 7-under the card after a round of even-par.

He sits alongside Robert Hogan whose rounds of 68 and 69 see him progress to the weekend’s play.

Aussie golf legends Peter Lonard and Brett Rumford remain in the mix at 6-under, alongside Taylor Macdonald, James Marchesani and Stephen Dartnall, who rocketed up the leaderboard with a second round of 65.

The second round cut was made at 1-over with 54 professionals and four amateurs progressing to the final two rounds.

The winner of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship come Sunday will receive the lion’s share of the $137,500 prize purse, World Golf Ranking Points as well as exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australia until the end of 2020.

Round three of the WA PGA Championship tees off at 7:15am AWST on Saturday morning from Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
