Gibson Stumbles at Nanshan Masters

A disastrous final round saw Rhein Gibson plummet down the leader board at the One Asia Tour’s Nanshan Masters at the weekend, falling from an overnight share of second to T15.

Gibson, one behind eventual winner Li Hao-tong at the start of the day, shot a 10-over 81 in difficult conditions which saw winds reach as high as 65 km/h during the round.

On a day when only four players bettered par, and only one broke 70, Gibson got off to a bad start and never recovered.

Bogies at the first, fourth and sixth holes were compounded by back to back doubles at the seventh and eighth with two more bogies and a double on the back nine sealing Gibson’s fate.

A long birdie putt at the final hole was the only highlight of the day for the 28-year-old.

Fellow Australia Jun Seok (Kevin) Lee was the polar opposite of Gibson firing the best round of the final day, a 2-under 69 that vaulted him from a share of eighth to outright second.

Lee, who earned his card with a victory at the One Asia Tour school in March, said after the round he was proud of his play.

"It was really, really windy," he told the One Asia website.

"Before I went out I was worried about it as this is not an easy course."

"I had to keep the ball in the right spot and make pars and hang in there. I could not have played any better, I am really happy." he said.

Michael Sim was the only other Australian to finish in the top-10 after a final round 76 left him T6.

Stephen Dartnall and Gareth Paddison (T11), Aaron Townsend (T15), David McKenzie (T17) and Scott Laycock (T19) were the only Australasians to finish in the top-20.
