A smaller field than some of the other events on the schedule, the PNG Open provides a terrific opportunity for some of the younger guys on the Tour to snatch up a full card for the rest of the year and 2018 season.
Last week’s $110,000 Morobe Open gives us a good indication of form heading in to this week, and some previous form in this stifling heat is another good reference.
A real Queensland theme this week following Cam Smith’s win in the US. Those from the Sunshine State, PNG’s closest neighbour, should also be more acclimatised to the conditions.
#5 Aaron Wilkin
A Wynnum Golf Club member who is looking to go one better this year and should be right in the mix again. Always tough to lose in a playoff but definitely lights a fire under a player.
#4 Chris Wood
Another Wynnum lad who was last week’s Morobe Open winner who has been making steady progress as a professional over the last couple of years. Used to the PNG conditions now after a few trips.
#3 Jake McLeod
This guy has been close already this year and it wouldn’t surprise to see him finally crack a win this week. Maybe he will get a haircut with the prizemoney? #BanTheManBun!
#2 Michael Wright
Would it be wrong to call this guy a veteran? Always seems to play well in PNG, a proven tour winner who played well last week and could just get back into the winner’s circle again this week. The last player to do the PNG double winning Morobe and PNG Open’s in 2009
#1 Anthony Quayle
Originally from NT but resides in the sunshine state these days. Has made a good start to his pro career and is a sweet swinger of the club who could just get it done this week, Anthony’s partner’s family lives in Port Moresby so he’s no stranger to New Guinea, big watch this week again.
