Adam Scott now has a decision to make ahead of the U.S. Open. after a deflating final round 73 at The Memorial tournament.
Still outside the World Top-60 who qualify automatically for Shinnecock Hills, Scott has the option of attending 36-hole qualifying tomorrow though it could not be confirmed if he would take that route.
He could also tee up in next week’s FedEx St Jude Classic, where he is officially entered, and hope to play his way into the World Top-60 with a high finish.
Either way, Scott was confident of his chances as late as Saturday evening at Muirfield Village where he was T11 through 54 holes and hopeful of a top-10 result at worst.
Those hopes faded early when he went to the turn in 1-over Sunday and ultimately fell 24 places on the leaderboard after an even par back-9.
While the U.S. Open will be uppermost in his mind Scott will leave the Memorial with mixed feelings as he continues to search for the consistency that has made him a staple in the world’s top echelon for the best part of a decade.
There have been flashes of brilliance all year but the 37-year-old has struggled to put together four good rounds which has hurt both his results and likely his confidence.
Despite his less than stellar finish Scott still claimed top Australasian honours at the event which continues to torment local resident Jason Day.
Day, a member at Muirfield Village who regularly practises at the club, made his best start in 10 appearances with opening rounds of 68-68 to be inside the top-10.
But things went awry Saturday with a 2-over 74 that dropped him well down the leaderboard and the same score Sunday saw him ultimately finish T44.
While he will be disappointed with the result Day is unlikely to read too much into it ahead of the U.S. Open where he will be among the favourites in two weeks’ time.
Marc Leishman was the last of the Australasians to play all four rounds, the Victorian finishing 1-under for the week and T62.
Both Rod Pampling and John Senden made the 36-hole cut but were eliminated Saturday while Cameron Davis, Cameron Smith and Danny Lee all missed the weekend.
