Sydney’s Dale Williamson has taken a significant step in progressing his game on the world stage after qualifying to play in his first PGA TOUR Series-China event at the Guangzhou Open this week.

In his first trip to China, the Killara Golf Club member shot 2-under 67 at Nansha Golf Club that will play host to the tournament proper this week to earn his place in the field.

The 24-year-old has not played on an international tour since the 2017 Indonesia Open on the Asian Tour with a best finish on the Australasian Tour a tie for 15th at the SP PNG Golf Open last year.

Williamson is one of 11 Australians and Kiwi Ryan Chisnall set to tee it up while just six events remain in the season.

Christopher Wood’s consistent form has him as the highest-placed Australian on the Order of Merit in 29th position with former Tour winner James Marchesani sitting in 36th place.

They are comfortably inside the top 50 ranked players who retain playing privileges for the following season but there are a host of Aussies currently sitting on the bubble.

Sydneysider Kevin Yuan is in 44th position, Queensland rookie Charlie Dann 48th while China Tour regular Max McCardle is right on the number in 50th.

After starting the season with two top-20 finishes in his first three starts Bryden Macpherson now finds himself in 58th position on the Order of Merit while Tim Stewart will be hoping to carry the form he showed to finish runner-up on the Philippine Tour last week to improve his current standing of 61st.

The other Australians in the field this week are Corey Hale (81st), Aaron Wilkin (103rd) and James Grierson (140th).
