Professional golf in the state received a significant boost from the WA Open and the TX Civil WA PGA Championships moving up in the calendar to coincide with the pro-am circuit, thus ensuring a much deeper field over the entire two month period.
In the week following the WA Open at WA Golf Club, the pro-am series will see five events over seven days at Lakelands, Joondalup, Hillview, Hartfield and Cottesloe — offering $82,000 in total. The PGA Tour of Australasia will then recommence at Goldfields Golf Club for the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship, followed by pro-ams in various metropolitan and regional centres including Sun City, Sea View, Mandurah, Pinjarra, Bunbury, Geraldton, Port Hedland and Broome.
Josh Madden, the State Manager of the WA/SA PGA division, said that the new golfing schedule has been a hit with both local and interstate professionals.
"We’ve worked hard this year in conjunction with the golf clubs to produce a really strong playing schedule and with the addition of the WA Open and WA PGA moving into the May –June series," said Madden.
"It’s looking really positive in regards to the depth and strength of the fields that are coming over to WA to ply their trade. We are always looking to build and grow our playing platforms and we know that our WA / SA Swing is getting stronger."
"We are very fortunate to have great golf courses that are in terrific condition at this time of the year. The players talk amongst themselves and our WA swing is becoming a must play on the national schedule."
The WA Open field will feature three West Australian golfers who have won on the PGA Tour of Australasia in the past 12 months, fronted by defending champion Daniel Fox of Lakelands.
Up and coming professional Jarryd Felton of Gosnells Golf Club will also make his return to the WA Open, but this time as the reigning NSW PGA Champion.
New Zealander and honorary West Aussie Michael Long will also be one to watch after his miraculous playoff win at the Oates Victorian Open earlier in the year. Long has been a long-time resident in Perth, and is currently the manager of Hill View Golf Club.
