The 2016 Tony Hollands Funerals QLD PGA Trainee Championship is underway at Indooroopilly Golf Club with Yamba PGA Trainee Louis Brown hitting the tournament’s first tee shot this morning.

In a unique concept, the four round tournament will be played over four different layouts with the 36 hole facility of Indooroopilly Golf Club providing the ability to showcase the versatility of one of Brisbane’s leading golf facilities. 82 PGA Trainees will play the Captain’s layout this morning (Green and Gold Nines) with their second round being played this afternoon on the Presidents course (Red and Blue Nines).

Current QLD PGA Trainee Order of Merit leader Paul Griffiths was eager to get the tournament underway.

"All of the Queensland PGA Trainees have been looking forward to this week and for me personally it is my final chance to win our state championship" said Griffiths.

"It is great to see a strong list of interstate Trainees playing the tournament though given the last time a Queenslander won the title was back in 2013, I am hoping that I can be the one to stop their recent run in the tournament."

Caloundra PGA Trainee Jacob Boyce has been in a battle with Griffiths for the Order of Merit title all year and currently finds himself 16 points behind though Boyce acknowledges the next four rounds could play a significant part in his chances to win the Order of Merit.

"Paul and I have obviously had a great year and we both have our eyes on the Order of Merit title" said Boyce.

"It is hard not to think about it knowing this week’s QLD PGA Trainee Championship is a tournament within a tournament though I can’t control what Paul does, nor he what I do so all I can do is know that I have prepared as best I can and hope it is good enough come Wednesday afternoon".

$35,000 in prizemoney and their name etched in the Carnegie Clark Cup is more than enough motivation to endure the 36 holes in today’s opening two rounds, and with only the top 50 players (plus ties) making the cut, eyes will be on both ends of the leaderboard.
