It was a day of upsets at the 2017 Pampling Plate as the top two qualifiers failed to reach today’s quarter finals.
Second seed and last year’s runner-up Sam Price was the first to fall in the morning’s round of 32, losing out to fellow Sanctuary Cove Trainee Professional Tom Major after his putt on the final hole lipped out in his attempt to take the match to extra holes.
Price wouldn’t be the only casualty on the opening day as the top seeded Neville Hogan was sent packing this afternoon by Arundel Hills Trainee Charles Wright. Wright managed to get the jump on Hogan early to be three up through the opening nine, and was able to put the top seed away with a 2 & 1 victory.
The loss of the top seeds has really opened up the chances of defending champion Jacob Boyce, who enjoyed two crushing victories today including a 6 & 5 win over Cooper Ecclestone this afternoon.
“It was great to play as well as I did today in the opening two rounds. I haven’t played this well for quite some time, so it’s a nice feeling heading into tomorrow’s quarter final,” said Boyce.
“Caboolture is such a good course to play match play on. There are a number of holes where the risk reward is significant and although you may hold back somewhat in stroke play, match play really gives you that chance to take it on.
“The job is far from done, but deep down I know if I keep playing the way that I did today hopefully the results will continue to come my way.”
