Burns closes OOM gap with win at Hurstville

Brad Burns has ended the Sydney swing of the Ladbrokes Legends Tour schedule on a high with a win at the Wayne Riley Georges River Council Legends Pro-Am.

At the tail end of a busy month the ever-consistent Burns added yet another win to his 2019 tally by posting a 5-under 65 total in difficult, windy conditions.

Burns thanked the Hurstville Golf Club staff and volunteers for facilitating a great event.

“The hospitality shown to us every year here is amazing, it’s a real community event,” Burns said.

“It’s great to get another win on the board and continue what has been a good year for me.”

With the two-stroke victory Burns has closed the gap between himself and Ladbrokes Legends Tour Order of Merit leader Michael Harwood.

Darren Rix and Ben Jackson claimed second place with rounds of 3-under 67.

A further four players including Peter Woodward, Shaquill Mongol, Douglas Maiden and Anthony Summers finished in red numbers at 1-under the card.

""Martin Peterson handled the conditions best with a 3 under 67, the highlight his eagle two on the 5th hole where he holed out with a wedge.

“I first started playing my golf here. My parents said where would I like to play when I was 10 years old and I chose Hurstville," said Peterson.

“Last year I sat around thinking I’d done enough to win and then Mike (Harwood) came in with 6-under 64 in just as tough a conditions as today. So I was a little nervous but it’s great to get a win here."

David Hill was the only other player to break par on the day and his 1-under 69 saw him finish runner up.

On even par was David Diaz and Chris Hollingsworth. Rounding out the top five was Tim Elliott with 1-over 71.

The Ladbrokes Legends Tour will move to Maitland next Monday for the East’s Legends Pro-Am for Maitland Palliative Care.

""Starting his round on the 7th hole, Harwood got off to a fast start with birdies on his opening three holes. Another birdie and eagle rounded out his first 9 holes to be 5-under the card and set up the win.

The Hurstville layout obviously suits Harwood’s eye after a runner-up finish at this event in 2016.

“It’s nice to go one better here this year,” said Harwood.

“I generally hit the ball quite straight and this golf course isn’t very forgiving if you miss the fairways” “I made some good putts to keep the momentum going today after making a great start.”

This is Harwood’s second win in as many weeks after taking out last week’s Sylvania BMW Cronulla Legends Pro-Am.

There was a three-way tie for second with Martin Peterson, Graham Banister and Chris Hollingsworth all shooting 2-under par 68. Mike Zilko and Brad Burns rounded out the top 5 with 1-under par 69.

The Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour moves onto Wakehurst Golf Club next Wednesday for the final event of the Sydney swing.
