Mathew Goggin knows the struggles that come with professional golf; this week he gets another taste of the good life.

A Charlotte resident, Goggin tried his hand at Monday qualifying for the PGA TOUR’s Wells Fargo Championship and shot 68 to secure one of four spots on offer, playing his way into a PGA TOUR event for the first time since the Frys.com Open in November 2014.

Tied for 19th at the Australian PGA Championship last December, signs were positive that Goggin had shrugged off a horrid run of injuries to get back near his best but a return to the PGA TOUR any time soon appeared unlikely.

A missed cut at the Web.com Tour’s Panama Championship where he shot 69-78 is his only start to date in 2019 but he can now take advantage of the comforts of home as he tees it up in a field that boasts Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and defending champion Jason Day.

Held at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, North Carolina, Goggin shot 68 in qualifying to be one of three players tied for second, three strokes behind Chip McDaniel.

It’s been seven years since Goggin last played at Quail Hollow Country Club having received a sponsor’s invitation the year prior whilst leading the Nationwide Tour moneylist at the time.

The 44-year-old Tasmanian came close to Monday qualifying for the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship but missed out in a playoff, his career record on the PGA TOUR standing at 278 events with five top-five finishes and career prize money of $US7,368,691.

Goggin is not the only Aussie to earn a place in the field in slightly unusual fashion with John Senden receiving a sponsor’s invitation to play this week, taking the number of Aussies teeing it up to seven.

Given his performance at The Masters a few weeks ago where he was tied for fifth, Day is considered an excellent chance of going to back-to-back, a feat no prior champion has managed at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Curtis Luck will be hoping to carry forward the momentum of his top-five finish at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Matt Jones, Rod Pampling and Cameron Davis all trying to advance their position in the FedEx Cup.

Three Aussies and a lone Kiwi are in the field for the Web.com Tour’s Nashville Golf Open this week hoping to emulate Cameron Davis’s win 12 months ago.

The win by Davis propelled him towards a 2019 PGA TOUR card which is ultimately what Brett Drewitt, Rhein Gibson, Jamie Arnold and Nick Voke have their sights set on this year.
