Sim hoping for third time lucky

Western Australia’s Michael Sim will continue his attempt to get back to the top echelons of the game when he makes his third Web.com tour start of the year at this week’s Digital Ally Open in Kansas.

""Sim has received a sponsor’s invitation to play the tournament as he desperately tries to recapture the form that saw him win three times on the secondary circuit in 2009.

That earned Sim immediate promotion to the PGA TOUR but a series of injuries in the seven years since has derailed his career.

After Monday qualifying for both the Rust Oleum Championship and Lincoln Land Charity Championship in June, Sim will be hoping to make his first cut of the year in America.

Seven Australians tee up this week at the Nicklaus GC at Lionsgate, Sim joined in the field by Robert Allenby, Steve Allan, Mark Hensby, Stuart Appleby , Jamie Arnold and Rhein Gibson.

Allenby comes into the week off some of his best golf of the season at last week’s Barbasol Championship on the PGA TOUR and will like his chances of improving his 97th positon on the money list.

The four time PGA TOUR winner is in danger of losing his Web.com status if he drops outside the top 100 and his play in Alabama could be the spark that turns his career around.

Mark Hensby also played on the main Tour last week but will be less pleased with his from after missing the cut.

Like Sim, Hensby had a promising career thrown into chaos by injury following a car accident in 2006 and is struggling to get back to the top of the game.

Currently outside the top 100 on the Web.com money list the former Presidents Cup player needs a dramatic form reversal to keep his playing privileges for next year.

Sydney’s Jamie Arnold will also be looking to turn his game around after a good run of play had him on track for a top 25 finish on the money list.

However, Arnold’s form has slipped in recent weeks as has his position on the money list where he is now 42nd after back to back missed cuts.

While still almost certain to play the Web.com Finals series as one of the top 75 money earners, Arnold would dearly like to wrap up one of the 25 cards available before the four tournament battle begins.

Arnold has shown he is capable of competing at this level with two top five finishes this season and if he can survive the grueling schedule may well earn himself a ticket to the PGA TOUR for 2018.

Rhein Gibson is the other Australian most likely to finish in the top 75 and fight for a PGA TOUR card, the 31-year-old having graduated once before.

Gibson has been at less than his best for much of 2017 but plays an aggressive game which is capable of yielding low scores and high finishes any given week.

Steve Allan and Stuart Appleby round out the Australian challenge this week, both veterans finding the going tough in 2017.

Appleby has played predominantly on the PGA TOUR where he has limited status and makes his fourth start on the secondary Tour while Allan sits outside the top 100 on the money list.
