Windy conditions greeted PGA Trainees today at the BMG QLD PGA Trainee Championship, presenting challenging elements never before seen by some Trainees.
Overnight leader Deyen Lawson opened the door for his challengers after carding a 10-over 82 to hang on to lead by three shots.
Starting the day leading by six on 11-under, Lawson was undoubtedly disappointed about his round though somewhat positive about what the final round may hold for him.
"It is certainly up there with one of the windiest days I have ever played in. You only had to be a little bit off today for the wind to make you look like you were a long way off," said Lawson after his round.
"82 is my worst score as a Trainee Professional, though if you told me at the start of the week that I would be leading by three shots heading into the final round, I would have taken it."
The best round of the day was 3-over 75 coming from Daniel Morgan, Ryan Norton, Josh Butler and Surfers Paradise Trainee, Paul Griffiths. Griffiths, who won the 2014 Pampling Plate, now sits in a tie for second with Manly Golf Club Trainee Taylor Cooper.
"I’ve always been taught not to fight the wind. If the wind is off the left, aim left and let the wind bring it back and if the wind is from the right, do the same," said Griffiths.
"There is no doubt it was the strongest wind I have ever played a tournament in and with the wind likely to decrease tomorrow, I am looking forward to the challenge of being in the final group."
The final round of the BMG QLD PGA Trainee Championship sees 10 Trainee Professionals within six shots of the lead and although Lawson is in the box seat, it is sure to be a memorable day as Trainees battle it out to win a state championship.
The final round will commence tomorrow at 7am with the final group teeing off at 9:50am.
