It’s the young guns on Tour who fired at the Victorian PGA Championship this morning moving themselves to the top of the leaderboard heading into the final two rounds.
Living just 10 minutes around the corner from Huntingdale, Tom Power Horan put his local knowledge to use firing 4-under 68 to be leading on 10-under the card.
“I live 10 minutes away so I’ve played here lots of times, I get to stay at home this week so it’s been really nice,” Power Horan said.
“I normally don’t play great around here because I tend to hit it wide, so my goal was just to hit the fairways, hit it really straight and then you can attack the course from there.”
Tomorrow the Professionals will need to play 36 holes as the final two rounds are played back-to-back.
Having been Professional for just 12 months, Power Horan is used to 36 hole days from his time competing as an amateur. He believes this will work in his favour.
“It’s going to be long day but it’s very much like amateur golf with 36 holes in a day and I’ve played a lot of golf like that so it should be fine.
“I think a lot of the Pros might not have played 36 holes in a day recently, and it’ll be a hot day tomorrow.”
Tour Rookie Anthony Quayle is another young gun firing at Huntingdale, thanks to a hot back-9 he fired 6-under 66 today to be 9-under after two rounds.
“I played quite nicely but I started pretty slow, I bogeyed my third hole and couldn’t really get anything going,” Quayle said.
“Then I lipped in a putt off the 7th and then birdied the next and then everything started to feel like it was going the right way.
“The back-9 was nice, probably the best shot I hit today was the shot in to 11, it was 175 metres with the wind blowing a fraction and I hit a little compress draw 5-iron in to about two feet.”
After pre-qualifying for the Victorian PGA Championship, Quayle is happy to be making the most of his opportunity.
“If you play well on the Monday Pre-Q you feel like you gain a bit of momentum coming in to the week anyway which is what I did, I’ve taken some of that momentum in to the last two days.”
The more experienced Gareth Paddison, who is a two-time Victorian PGA Champion, joins Quayle tied 2nd on the leaderboard.
A further shot back is Damien Jordan, who welcomed a new son into the world on Tuesday. He is joined on the leaderboard in fourth position by Aron Price who fired 2-under 70 in the second round.
In the pro-am portion of the tournament, David McKenzie and Andre Koh took out the team’s championship with a score of 19-under par.
The second round cut at the Victorian PGA Championship was made at even par with 50 Professionals making the weekend rounds.
Both rounds three and four will be played on Saturday.
The third round will tee off at Huntingdale Golf Club at 7.15am with the lead group of Power Horan, Quayle and Paddison on course at 8.35am.
Entry to the Victorian PGA Championship is free with plenty of fun activities for kids available at Huntingdale from 9am until 1.30pm.
The Victorian PGA Championship will be played from 2-4 February at Huntingdale Golf Club with a field of 92 players vying for a prize purse of AU$100,000.
The winner will receive Official World Golf Ranking Points and become fully exempt on to the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia for the remainder of this season plus a further season.
