Terry Pilkadaris and Daniel Gaunt have spearheaded one of Australia’s best weeks on the European Tour in recent memory with the pair finishing in a share of second, two shots behind Made in Denmark winner David Horsey.
While a late double bogey Sunday, which cost Pilkadaris a chance at his first European Tour victory he was one of four Australians in the field with only one finishing outside the top-10.
Pilkadaris and Gaunt were the pick of the quartet but Richard Green was just a shot behind them in a tie for sixth while Jason Scrivener posted his best result since his first event in South Africa in January.
A final round 68 lifted the West Australian 21 places up the leader board to a share of 14th, his first top-20 since finishing T11 at the South African Open to start the year.
While Gaunt’s final round 66 rocketed him up the leader board it was Pilkadaris who had the best chance among the Australians having entered the final round just a shot behind eventual winner David Horsey.
A birdie at the second saw Pilkadaris draw level and after making the turn even par was still just one behind.
But the pivotal moment came at the 15th hole when Pilkadaris was forced to take a penalty drop and notched a tournament killing double bogey.
"I’m disappointed," he told the European Tour website after finishing his round.
"I bogeyed 14 and doubled 15 so I couldn’t keep the pressure on. I had a half chance on the 18th with an 18-footer but just pushed it right. That’s the way golf goes."
Richard Green will also feel the week was a missed opportunity after a final round which included only five pars but added up to even par 70.
The left-hander fired seven birdies on the day but gave them all back with five bogies and a double.
