The Avner Foundation has been announced as a charity partner of the 2014 Australian PGA Championship.
The Avner Foundation has been announced as a charity partner of the 2014 Australian PGA Championship.
The Avner Foundation is the only Foundation in Australia exclusively focused on Pancreatic Cancer research and seeks to break through 40 years of minimal progress by doubling the number of people who survive Pancreatic Cancer by 2020.
Together with Coca-Cola Amatil and Woolworths, a nationwide promotion in Woolworths supermarkets will commence on October 15 in support of the Avner Foundation and Pancreatic Cancer research.
"Pancreatic Cancer has the lowest survival rates of the 28 most common cancers," said Caroline Kelly, Co Founder and Chair of the Avner Foundation.
"The five year survival rate is only 5.2 per cent."
Thanks to Woolworths and Coca-Cola Amatil, customers who buy two Deep Spring products will have the chance to win flights, accommodation and tickets to this year’s Australian PGA Championship.
The Avner Foundation will receive 10 cents from each sale during the promotion period.
"We extend our sincere thanks to the PGA of Australia, Coca-Cola Amatil and Woolworths for their support of the Avner Foundation and their help in making survival possible," said Caroline.
As part of the partnership, Friday December 12 will see the Australian PGA Championship turn Purple – the colour of Pancreatic Cancer – for Purple Day to support the Avner Foundation.
"Raising money to help find a cure for this awful disease and creating awareness are key reasons why the Avner Foundation exists and we hope we can help the Foundation on both fronts," said Brian Thorburn, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of Australia.
"We encourage everyone, our Professionals, our suppliers and our fans, to wear something purple on Friday December 12 to heighten awareness and support the crucial work the Foundation carries out."
Claire Harvey, the daughter of award winning journalist Peter Harvey and Deputy Editor of The Sunday Telegraph, joined the Avner Foundation as an Ambassador to help fight this underdog of cancers after losing her father to the disease.
The Avner Foundation was formed in 2008 when Caroline Kelly’s husband, Avner, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and faced a bleak prognosis.
Through incredible support of corporate and individual supporters, the Foundation has raised over $4 million dollars since its inception in 2008.
Statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) show that in 2010 Pancreatic Cancer accounted for 2.3 per cent of all new cancers, with 2,663 new cases diagnosed in Australia.
The AIHW expect approximately 2,890 Australians to be diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2014.
