Rain delays saw players unable to finishthe third round and when play was suspended Saturday evening both Senior andFowler were well in contention for the year’s final over-50’s Major.
But when play resumed Sunday morningneither could find the magic of the previous day, Senior stumbling with adouble bogey seven at the par-5 14th while Fowler couldn’t find abirdie until the 18th hole.
Fowler teed off Sunday within two of thelead held by Marco Dawson and Colin Montgomerie but while those around went lowthe 1983 Australian Open champion battled to find the hole and an eventual2-over-par round saw him drop to T9, 10 shots behind eventual champion Dawson.
Senior rallied on Sunday with a 1-under 71to finish T12 with the next best Australian Peter O’Malley at even par for theweek and T31 and Richard Backwell T80.
Senior has played all five Majors this yearand made the cut in all except the Senior Players’ Championship where he wasforced to withdraw with injury.
Fowler has played three of the five andalso made the cut in all of them, this week’s T9 his best though he has hadsome standout moments for the year.
His second round 67 at the Senior PGAChampionship in Indiana in May was the equal best of the week on a course thatplayed extremely difficult.
He also shared the lead through 36 holes ofthe US Senior Open a month ago before going on to post a top-20 finish.
With two wins on the European Senior Touralready this year Fowler is enjoying his best season since joining the over-50’sand will be looking for a strong finish to the year in the remaining fourevents of the season.
Of the remaining Australians Glenn Joyner,who survived qualifying last week, missed the cut by a shot while Mike Harwoodalso missed the weekend’s play.
