With the eyes of the golf world on Carnoustie this week no one particularly wants to be playing the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship but as Aaron Baddeley proved two years ago, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
With the eyes of the golf world on Carnoustie this week no one particularly wants to be playing the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship but as Aaron Baddeley proved two years ago, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
With much attention focused on the inclusion of LPGA star Brittany Lincicome in the field taking part at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Kentucky, six Australians and Kiwis Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson will be hoping to use the week to improve their position in the FedEx Cup.
Of the Aussies teeing it up this week it is Baddeley who possesses the greatest potential upside as he sits just outside the top 125 on the moneylist through the John Deere Classic.
Currently ranked 133rd in the FedEx Cup, Baddeley will be out to rekindle the memories of 2016 when he recorded the fourth PGA Tour win of his career, albeit it at a different golf course. He was unable to defend his title last year due to his presence in the field at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
The best of the Aussie contingent at the US Open at Shinnecock last month, Baddeley has missed the cut in each of his past three tournaments and is ranked 144th in strokes gained putting in 2018, the part of his game that has been the cornerstone of success in the past.
Precariously placed at 124th in the FedEx Cup, Lee will be desperate to turn around a frustrating fortnight.
Disgusted by his putting performance at the tournament at the Greenbrier two weeks ago Lee handed a stunned young fan his putter as he left the 18th green and was then last week disqualified from the John Deere Classic for changing his style of golf ball mid-round.
It has been a mixed bag for Lee since he was tied for seventh at The Players Championship with two top-15 finishes and four missed cuts to go with last week’s DQ.
Now playing intermittently on the Champions Tour, Peter Lonard makes just his third PGA Tour appearance in six years this week along with fellow Aussies Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Steven Bowditch and Cameron Percy.
