Former Yeppoon Golf Club junior Jake McLeod shares the lead with fellow Queenslander Aaron Wilkin after both Professionals fired opening rounds of 6-under par 66 in the Ian Weigh Toyota Rockhampton Pro-Am.
“I hit the ball really solid today and felt like I placed the ball well in terms of my course management,” said McLeod.
“This good positioning with my approach shots gave me a lot of birdie opportunities which I was able to capitalise on courtesy of some good putting.
McLeod was familiar with the layout having played his junior golf in and around the area.
“It was great to be paired with an old friend from my junior days, it made for a really relaxed round. I’m familiar with the course after playing a lot of golf here throughout my junior years and I think that will be an advantage this week”.
Professional Aaron Wilkin also made the most of the early start to be out in front as co-leader with his opening round of 6-under 66.
“I got off to a slow start with a bogey on my second hole of the day but got it back with a birdie on the next hole,” said Wilkin.
“I had a really good back nine with a string of four birdies which definitely got things going mid way through the round. Tomorrow I intend to follow a similar game plan to today’s round with my goal to stay steady and try and enjoy myself on course as much as possible."
The next best placed Professionals are Jarryd Felton, Maverick Antcliff and Peter Martin one shot further back from our co leaders on a score of 5-under 67.
The second round of the Ian Weigh Toyota Rockhampton Pro-Am tees off at 6.50am tomorrow morning with the lead players teeing off at 12.10pm.
