Victorian David McKenzie and Kiwi Michael Campbell have surged late to finish inside the top 20 at the Champions Tour’s Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary.

American Wes Short Jnr took advantage of a fortuitous bounce of a rock inside a penalty area to birdie the 72nd hole and win by a single stroke with McKenzie and Campbell leaving their runs a little too late.

McKenzie hasn’t finished worse than 25th in his past four starts dating back to the Senior Open and moved into a tie for 12th with a final round of 3-under 67 at the demanding Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.

Only three players signed for Sunday scores better than McKenzie who used a run of three straight birdies early on the front nine to ignite his round and move up 19 spots on the leaderboard.

A resurgent Campbell also made a significant impression on Sunday, moving up 16 places with a round of 2-under 68 to finish tied for 15th, his best finish on the Champions Tour in his first year on the seniors circuit.

Unlike McKenzie, Campbell did his best work on the back nine in his final round, back-to-back birdies at three and four countered by bogeys at five and seven as he turned even with the card.

He compiled consecutive birdies again at 11 and 12 and when he added a third at the par-5 finishing hole had climbed inside the top 20.

Stephen Leaney (69) and New Zealand’s Grant Waite (68) also made forward progress in their final round but finished well down the leaderboard.

Peter Fowler was the Australian in the field at the Staysure Tour’s The Sinclair Invitational in the UK, the New South Welshman finishing tied for 13th, eight shots back from England’s David Shacklady.
