Max McCardle has gone deep to win the 20th BHP Billiton Classic in Port Headland.
McCardle
fired a final round 9-under 63 to claim victory on the Choice Hotels PGA Pro-Am
Series with a three round total of 25-under 191.
With
the tournament scoring record in his sights, McCardle was able to seal victory
bit fell one short of his goal.
"I knew if I kept that number in mind it would
probably be enough," said McCardle.
"When the wind doesn’t blow up here I think we
all re-set our goals for the tournament and decided we had to make birdies and
lots of them."
"It
was clearly a great week to score, the sand greens were very consistent and if
you were able to control your distances coming into them it felt like birdie
was achievable on just about every hole."
Queenslander
Brett Rankin was disappointed not to have held on for the win but said, "if you
had
told
me before we got here that in my first visit to WA and on sand greens I’d have
finished
second,
I would have been very happy with it."
"We
are headed up to Broome next week and I’m really looking forward to it."
The
BHP Billiton Pro-Am in Port Hedland has been contested since 1996 and has had
some very
classy
winners during its history including Lyndsay Stephen, Nick O’Hern, Scott
Strange and Adam Bland.
McCardle
will be happy to add his name to this list as he heads into a busy schedule.
"This
is exactly what I needed to get some confidence and momentum for the rest of
the year," said McCardle.
"My
plans are to head back out to the PGA TOUR China later this year where I have a
full card and see if I can keep shooting some low numbers."
The
WA swing of the Choice Hotels Pro-Am Series now heads to its final event in Broome
starting next week.
