Ryan Laird from Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club in Victoria leads the WA/NT Trainee Championship presented by ADH Club Car at the halfway mark.
After two rounds Laird is 5-under
the card to be one shot clear of local hope and defending champion Brody Martin
from Marangaroo Golf Club.
The rest of the field found the
weather conditions difficult which made the Wembley Golf Course a stern test
but hope to challenge the leaders with another 36 holes in front of them
tomorrow.
Jimmy Heron the Operations
Manager at Wembley GC had hoped the leaders might go low around the Tuart
Course, but with the cold weather, 40kmh winds, and rain, it’s obviously
proving quite a challenge.
"In this weather 36 holes makes
for a long day, it can be quite tight off the tee in places and with cross
winds like this you don’t have to be off by much to find trouble," said Heron.
Overnight leader, Laird has been
a consistent performer this year amongst the Trainees and currently sits second
on the Victorian Trainee Order of Merit and inside the top-10 nationally.
"I’ve really put in a lot of time
and effort into competing well this year," said Laird.
"I really wanted to make an
effort to put myself in contention more often, and so far, I feel like I’m
heading in the right direction."
Laird will need to continue to
produce his best golf to take out the title with Martin still aiming for back
to back wins.
"It’s going to be fun tomorrow,
there should be plenty of birdies out there, it not over yet, that’s for sure. Hopefully
we can push each other and play some great golf," said Martin.
