Matt Jones is the latest Australian to earn his place into The Open to be played at St Andrews from from 16-19 July.
New South Welshman Jones secured his place in the field via
his world ranking.
Ranked 67th on the Official World Golf Rankings,
Jones was one of the six highest ranked players in the world not already
exempted into the field at the 29th
June and so was afforded a position.
Jones made his debut at The Open last year and finished tied
54th.
With the addition of Jones to the field the total number of
Australians teeing up at St Andrews is now 14.
This is the most representatives Australia has had competing
in The Open since 2009.
Aussies to already have qualified are Adam Bland, Brett
Rumford, Scott Strange, Marc Leishman, Scott Hend, Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott, Rod
Pampling, Jason Day, John Senden, Marcus Fraser, Greg Chalmers, Steven Bowditch
and Matt Jones.
There are still opportunities for more Australians to earn
their way to The Open with this week’s Alstom Open de France and next week’s
Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open offering places to the leading three
players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top-10 and ties.
For those Aussie plying their trade on the PGA TOUR the
Grenbrier Classic presents their opportunity to get to The Open with the leading
four players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top-12 and ties earning a
place in the field.
An additional place is on offer at the John Deere Classic
with the leading player (not otherwise exempt) who finishes in the top-5 and
ties receiving a ticket into The Open.
The last 12 positions into The Open are then on offer at Final
Qualifying which is held at four venues across the UK.
