With a leaderboard that is packed full of international names, Nathan Holman is flying the flag for Australia after the third round of the Australian PGA Championship.
Starting round three 1-over the card, the Victorian fired a 2-under 70 for the day to move himself to 1-under for the tournament, and if it wasn’t for an unfortunate bogey on the last, Holman would have been happier with his performance.
"A bogey on the last is pretty disappointing. It was a tough hole today with that pin being back left and I thought I hit a good shot in there and obviously a bad bounce and it ran through the green. Nice chip shot but a poor putt," said Holman.
"It’s going to be probably a tough day again tomorrow, wind’s probably up again, so staying patient like I did today is going to be the key I think."
"I’ve been close a few times and I kind of got myself into some really good positions and haven’t capitalised yet but you keep doing that a number of times, you’re going to get one that’s going to work out for you, so hopefully tomorrow."
Playing much of the year overseas on the European Tour and Asian Tour, Holman has had four starts on the PGA Tour of Australasia this season and on every occasion hasn’t missed a cut. However, it’s the temptation of an extended European Tour card that is playing on Holman’s mind.
"Yeah, definitely, that’s probably what to play for."
"It’s a massive opportunity so early in the season. If you win, you get that year exemption but even if you have a nice result and you can get some good points on the Race to Dubai early and create some playing opportunities for yourself in Europe later that year, I think it’s a great opportunity not for just young guys in Australia but for anyone."
The Australian contingent have the opportunity to dominate the leaderboard on the final day with a further seven Aussies still in contention.
Canberra’s Matt Millar is only one shot behind Holman on even par and goes into the final round tided for fifth alongside Swedish superstar, David Lingmerth.
On 1-over card and rounding out the Aussie top-10 are Daniel Nisbet (QLD), Richard Green (VIC), Cameron Smith (QLD), Michael Wright (QLD) Jack Wilson (VIC) and Dimi Papadatos (NSW) who are all tied seventh.
The Australian PGA Championship is being played for AU$1.75million and is co-sanctioned with the European Tour, which has seen an improved strength of field through a greater depth of international players from Europe and South Africa competing in this year’s tournament.
Tickets for the tournament are available through Ticketek with children 16 years and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Discounts are also available for members of RACV and affiliated motoring clubs as well as for Gold Coast residents.
The Championship is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as well as the City of Gold Coast and Gold Coast Tourism.
