New South Wales professionals Darren Burger and Brendan Smith have capped off their assault on the Queensland Sunshine Tour by taking out the 2014 Club Car Queensland PGA Foursomes Championship.
Coming into the Foursomes Championship with mixed form, Burger and Smith combined well throughout the 36 hole Championship to claim a one shot victory over defending champions Sven Puymbroeck and Ian Esson.
After firing a disappointing 74 in the morning round to sit six shots behind the lead, Burger and Smith knew that they would need to significantly improve on that round in the afternoon if they were going to be competitive. "Although we were a little disappointed with our score in the morning round, both Brendan and I knew that we were playing good enough but just needed to make a few more putts," said Burger.
The putts certainly fell for the pair in the afternoon round, firing a six under par 64 to hold the clubhouse lead at two under par with only a few groups to complete their rounds. After a short but anxious wait, Burger and Brown were crowned the Club Car Queensland PGA Foursomes Champions.
"It is great to win a Championship that boasts so much history," said Burger. To join the likes of Scott Hend and Ian Baker-Finch as winners of this title is something that I am proud of and hopefully it marks the beginning of future victories for myself around the country."
The Queensland PGA Trainee Foursomes Championship were also contested, with New South Wales Trainee Professional Mitchell McComas combining with Queensland’s Philip Covill for a six shot victory. Covill and McComas finished on four over par, six shots ahead of Matthew Douglas and Ji McBryde.
"To win a state Championship is always something that professionals strive for and to do so in our final year of
our traineeship is very satisfying," said Covill.
Professionals will now enjoy a couple of days off before preparations start for the $200,000 Jeep Pro Am which gets underway on Wednesday at the Glades Golf Club. Brett Rankin currently leads the Queensland Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, but with the Jeep Pro Am offering record prizemoney, anyone that has played at least 10 events throughout the season could still see themselves walking away with the Order of Merit title.
