This year marks the 60th anniversary of Thomson’s Open victory at St Andrews, which he claimed in 1955 with a two-stroke win over Scottish Professional, John Fallon.

The occasion will also be used to pay tribute to the late Kel Nagle, who won the Centenary Open in 1960 also at St Andrews.

Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A said, "We are looking forward to a wonderful celebration of the rich heritage of The Open at the Champion Golfers’ Challenge in St Andrews,"

"As golf fans, we all have cherished memories of watching these great players competing over the years and the excitement of seeing such inspirational competitors winning The Open,"

"It will also be a fitting occasion to recognise the wonderful career of Kel Nagle, one of the sport’s great gentlemen, who is sadly no longer with us."

Thomson, a five-time winner of The Open, is the only Professional to win the tournament consecutively for three years in the 20th century and one of only four Australians to win one of the most iconic trophies in sport, the Claret Jug.

Throughout his career, Thomson secured six wins on the PGA TOUR, 34 on the PGA Tour of Australasia and 11 on the Champions Tour.

In 1988, Thomson received golf’s highest honour, induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The Champion Golfers’ Challenge will begin at 3.30pm on Wednesday 15 July, with the first tee time at 4pm.

The historic links at the Home of Golf, St Andrews, will host the 144th Open from 12 – 19 July 2015.
