After a blazing finish and near miss at US Open qualifying earlier in the week Robert Allenby will be in his comfort zone at the FedEx St Jude Classic in Tennessee this week.
Allenby is desperately in need of a good
result in a season where he has made just six cuts in 15 starts and the host
course this week, TPC Southwind, has been a happy hunting ground in the past.
In 12 appearances Allenby has notched five
top-10 finishes including a play-off loss in 2008 when he stormed home with a
5-under 65 before eventually losing to Justin Leonard in extra time.
While he missed the cut here last year his
seven birdie second round at US Open qualifying on Monday suggests he may have
found something in his game and on a course where he has good memories that
shot of confidence can only bode well.
Also in his favour is the fact many of the
Tour’s top players won’t tee up this week as they prepare in earnest for the
year’s second major at Chambers Bay and that presents an opportunity he will be
keen to take advantage of.
Allenby is one of seven Australians playing
the Memphis event, joined in the field by Aaron Baddeley, Steven Bowditch, Greg
Chalmers, Rod Pampling, Matt Jones and Cameron Percy.
Pampling and Chalmers also come into the
week off close calls at US Open qualifying with Chalmers in particular looking
for a good result.
The left hander has been consistent in his
limited starts this year but is yet to post a result better than T26 and needs to lift if he is to get into the
top-125 on the FedEx Cup list and earn back playing rights next year.
Pampling’s win on the Web.com Tour last
month almost assures he will be back on the PGA TOUR in 2016 and his
expectations for the week likely won’t be high on a course where he has missed
the cut four times in five appearances.
Aaron Baddeley has a similarly poor record
missing three cuts in four starts while Matt Jones has never played the weekend
in three trips to TPC Southwind.
Steven Bowditch proved at the Byron Nelson
that previous form on a course means little come tournament week and with three
missed cuts and two withdrawals in six starts at this tournament he will need a
similar effort to two weeks ago to contend at the weekend. However the
Queenslander has extra motivation, at 64th on the Official World
Golf Rankings a good result could see him inside the top-60 by next week and
into the US Open.
Cameron Percy rounds out the Australian
challenge and while he has limited success at this event comes into the week
off a season best T10 at the Byron Nelson and will be hoping to carry that
momentum into the week.
Nathan Green is listed as an alternate but
seems unlikely to get a start.
