Robert Allenby has earned ‘sleeper pick’ status from the one of the PGA TOUR’s lead analysts ahead of this week’s OHL Classic in Mexico.
Allenby, who earned the last of 125 cards on offer last year via the FedEx Cup points list, heads Rob Bolton’s picks based on good previous form at this event and good early season statistics.
Bolton describes Allenby as "one of this generation’s quintessential ballstrikers" and notes his early season numbers of 13th in fairways hit, 5th in greens in regulation and 9th in proximity to the hole as indicators the Victorian is a good bet this week.
Allenby has twice played at Mayakoba losing an epic eight hole playoff to John Huh in 2012 and finishing a credible T16 last year.
After enduring one of his worst years on the TOUR in 2013/14 Allenby looks to be off to a better start this season having already notched a top 10 at the season opening Fry’s.com Open.
The TOUR veteran is one of five Australians in this week’s field including Cameron Smith who earned a sponsor’s invite to Mexico despite missing the cut at last week’s Sanderson Farms event.
Smith has been in top form on the Asian Tour and is looking to make the most of the opportunity to tee up in the US thanks to a top five finish at the recent CIMB Classic in Malaysia.
Prior to last week’s tournament, his first PGA TOUR event on US soil, Smith had not been out of the top 10 sin six starts dating back to September.
He will be looking for a return to that form this week as a top 10 finish would see him eligible to tee up in the TOUR’s next full field event, the Sony Open in January.
Other Australians in the field this week are Cameron Percy, Aaron Baddeley and Greg Chalmers.
Percy is the only one of the three with a top 20 finish to his name in Mexico when T19 in 2011. Greg Chalmers, looking to play his way back to the PGA TOUR after losing his status last season, has played the OHL twice for a T60 and T62 record while Baddeley missed the cut in his only appearance in 2011.
