Australian golfer Adam Scott will today become the World Number One on the Official World Golf Rankings.
Having spent 38 weeks at the number two position, Scott officially claimed the top spot ending Tiger Woods’ 60 week reign.
Despite not playing last week Scott topped the Official World Golf Rankings and will tee it up for the first time as the World Number 1 in the Crowne Plaza Invitational this week.
Scott becomes just the second Australian to be the world’s highest ranked golfer following his mentor Greg Norman who held the position for 331 weeks in the 1980s and 1990s.
"This is another outstanding achievement for Adam Scott," said Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia.
"The Australian golfing community is very proud of Adam and we look forward to watching his progress throughout the year."
Scott continues Australia’s dominance on the world stage in 2014. Already this year, Jason Day, John Senden, Steven Bowditch and Matt Jones have notched victories on the PGA TOUR, while this week Marcus Both was victorious at the Asian Tour’s Philippine Open.
"Australia is a proud sporting nation and we are privileged to have so many talented golfers flying the Aussie flag around the world," added Thorburn.
Since the Official World Golf Rankings inception just 17 golfers have held the number one position.
