From the moment Australian Steven Jeffress hit the first shot of the tournament until he sunk the last putt to become the first Fiji International champion, it was a week of highlights.
However it was about more than just inside the ropes action, the Fijians stamped their own unique personality on the tournament, from a traditional sevusevu ceremony to warrior dancers welcoming spectators, Fiji announced its arrival onto the international golf stage.
The Fiji International is back from 15-18 October; make sure it’s on your calendar because we think it’s one golf tournament you won’t want to miss!
But if you need some more convincing here are our top-5 reasons you should come to the Fiji International.
Before we get carried away on the location let’s not forget about the most important thing…the golf! The Fiji International is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia tours which means it draws some of the best golfing talent from the Asia-Pacific region. With a $1 million prize purse and Official World Golf Ranking Points up for grabs the tournament offers huge opportunities for the winner. 2014 champion Steven Jeffress found himself finishing second on the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit thanks to his pay cheque in Fiji which earned him a place in the lucrative WGC – Cadillac Championship this year. While you can expect to see all the regular big name New Zealand, Australian and Asian players in action some exciting announcements are expected shortly about other international stars. Positioned the week after the Presidents Cup in Korea, Fiji is the perfect half-way point between Asia and the US.
The Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, designed by three time Major winner Vijay Singh, provides stunning views. The lush green grass of the rolling fairways contrasts against the dramatic hillside landscape makes the course layout unique. But if the beauty of the course isn’t enough, turn around and gaze upon the Coral Coast. The Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course is built on one of the most beautiful stretches of beachfront in Fiji ensuring that 15 of the 18 holes have a sparkling backdrop of coral reefs and the Pacific Ocean.
While it’s always fun to watch the Pros in action it’s even better to be part of it yourself. The Fiji International is looking for volunteers to go inside the ropes as walking scorers. This opportunity gives you the chance to see golf from a different angle, be closer to the action and interact with the players. But if scoring isn’t for you there are plenty of other volunteering roles that are integral at an international tournament of this calibre so combine your passion for golf and travel with this unique experience.
So, you think you have seen hospitality at a golf tournament? Marquees around the 18th, corporates in suits eating finger food…think again! The beach at the 4th hole is the ultimate destination on course at the Fiji International. Combining golf and the best parts of Fiji…the sun, sand and water the Natadola Beach Oasis provides prime viewing of the par-3 4th hole whilst luxuriating in cabanas on the white sand beach. Enjoy champagne, an array of tropical delights and if it all gets too hot take a dip in the crystal waters!
With the quality of golf on display at the Fiji International you are sure to be inspired! Luckily Fiji boasts a number of top quality golf courses, we suggest you pack your clubs and head to Denarau Golf and Racquet Club or the Pearl Championship Fiji Golf Course and Country Club. Put into practice what you have just witnessed at the Fiji International.
However you choose to visit the Fiji International we look forward to welcoming you with the friendly Fijian spirit the Pacific country is famous for.
