Seven Aussies headed to Augusta

Australia will have its best Masters representation in six years when seven of our best players take on Augusta National this week.

Matt Jones’ thrilling come from behind victory in the Shell Houston Open means there will be six Professionals teeing up alongside amateur Oliver Goss when the year’s first major gets underway on Friday Australian time.

Our previous best was nine players in 2008.

Jones’s heroics at the Golf Club of Houston to defeat world number 11 Matt Kuchar in extra time made it back to back victories for Australians in the Lone Start state after Steven Bowditch played his way into Augusta with a win in San Antonio the previous week.

It’s the second time in four years Australians have won in consecutive weeks in Texas with Adam Scott and Jason Day also achieving the feat in 2010 (Scott at the Texas Open and Day at the Byron Nelson).

Jones, who looked to have come up one shot short in pursuit of his first win until Kuchar inexplicably hit into the water on the final hole and made bogey, had been planning a two week break before the win but will now be packing his bags for Augusta instead.

"My schedule’s changed a bit now I guess," he said after the round.

"I was going home to play with my 2-year-old and my three week old then I was going to take Hilton Head off (the week after the Masters) and just relax but now I’ll have to change the schedule.

"This win is special and what comes with that win is amazing and its great for all the work I’ve put in over the years to finally get it."

Jones’ win was the only highlight in an otherwise indifferent week for the Australians.

Greg Chalmers was the only other to make the cut but rounds of 75-76 at the weekend saw him tumble to T69, ahead of just six players.

Augusta hopefuls Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby were never in the mix while rookie Scott Gardiner put up one of his worst career scores with a second round 80 to miss the cut.

Last week’s winner Steven Bowditch started well with an opening round 71 but fatigue caught up with him by Friday and a 78 saw him leaving early for Augusta National.
