With tricky winds making weekend conditions difficult it was no surprise to see veteran Richard Green finish best among the Australians at the European Tour and OneAsia co-sanctioned Volvo China Open at the weekend.
Green, the reigning Oates Vic Open winner, is playing with
renewed confidence after an excellent 2014 campaign in Europe, was consistent
over the four days.
The 43-year-old produced rounds of 73-71-69-73 to finish in
a share of 18th, two shots better than the next best of the
Australasians Matt Griffin and Michael Hendry.
Coming off the biggest win of his career and maiden Japan
Tour title the week before Hendry opened brilliantly with a 4-under 68 that was
good enough for a share of the first round lead.
However, he couldn’t maintain the momentum and fell off the
pace with three consecutive over-par rounds to finish the week.
Griffin was the opposite of his Kiwi counterpart, opening
badly with a 75 but recovering well with a second round 68 to make the cut.
The weekend’s gusty conditions proved difficult for the
entire field, Griffin included, and his 72-73 weekend was a creditable
performance under the circumstances but not enough to move forward on the
leaderboard.
Scott Strange and Rhein Gibson were next best sharing 42nd
place at 1-over the card, Strange disappointed with his final round 77 which
saw him plummet 32 places down the leaderboard.
Marcus Fraser and Terry Pilkadaris (T47) were next best
followed by Kevin Lee (T51), Nick Cullen (T56), Scott Hend (T60) and Steven
Jeffress (67th).
There were some surprises among the Australians to miss the
cut, most notable Wade Ormsby and Andrew Dodt among those who failed to make
the weekend.
Also missing out were Gavin Flint, amateur Blake Proverbs,
Jake Higginbottom and David Bransdon.
