Japan Tour veteran David Smail has kept the hot streak alive with a T4 finish at the ISPS Handa Global Cup ensuring an Australasian has finished top-five in every event so far this year.
Smail posted a brilliant final round 65,
his best of the week, to jump to 12-under for the tournament and just two shots
out of a playoff for the title.
The finish marks a huge turnaround in form
for the New Zealander who had missed his previous five cuts.
The result comes against the strongest
field of the year in Japan with several international stars invited to the
tournament.
Among those was US Open top -20 finisher
John Senden, who was the best of the Australians, at 11-under the card and T8.
Senden lit up the course in round three
with a 5-under 66, the highlight coming from his 23 putts for the day including
a one putt for eagle at the par-5 10th.
That was a 10 shot improvement on the
greens from Friday where he battled home with 33 strokes including a 3-putt
bogey at the second.
Jake Higginbottom was next best of the
Australians at 5-under and T42 followed by the only other Australasians to make
the cut, Steve Conran and Michael Hendry (T48).
Australian Masters champion Nick Cullen
also made the cut however was an unfortunately withdrawal due to a reoccurring injury.
Not making the weekend were: Won Joon Lee,
Matt Griffin, Brad Kennedy, Brendan Jones, Matthew Guyatt, Peter Wilson and the
amateurs Cameron Davis and Jarryd Felton.
