Having shared the lead through 36 holes Peter Fowler went on to post a top-20 finish at the US Senior Open this week.
Fowler, who
has been in stunning form on the European Senior Tour with two wins this year,
was in prime position heading to the weekend after opening with rounds of
69-66.
While a 2-over
round on Saturday was disappointing Fowler had played his way into contention
through 10 holes Sunday and at 2-under for the round was within three of the
leaders.
But scoring
was hot in the final round and as the leaders pulled away Fowler dropped four
shots late in the round to eventually finish T17.
Fowler’s form
would have surprised many in the US where he has tried unsuccessfully to
qualify for the Champions Tour several times.
But as a five
time winner on the European over-50’s circuit, and the form player on that side
of the Atlantic in recent weeks with two wins and a runner-up, Fowler was
primed for a good result.
New Zealand’s
Grant Waite was the best of the three Australasians in the event finishing T3,
while Peter Senior started well but struggled at the weekend to finish T26.
