Smail getting back on pace

After posting his first top-10 in more than a year last week David Smail has a chance to continue his return to form when he tees up at this week’s Sega Sammy Cup.

"DavidSmail last finished inside the top-10 in November 2013 but was impressive last week with four sub par rounds.

He returns to a course where he has enjoyed previous success, finishing T3 In 2003 and T7 in 2007.

A five-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour Smail was mired in a slump in 2014 where despite missing just four cuts recorded nothing better than T13 from 21 starts.

2015 started in a similar vein but Smail found something in his game last week and after a solid first three days blitzed the course Sunday in 7-under 65 to storm up the leader board.

Smail is one of 12 Australasians teeing up this week joined by Kurt Barnes, Matt Griffin, Brad Kennedy, Michael Hendry, Adam Bland, Brendan Jones, Jordan Zunic, Won Joon Lee, Matt Guyatt, Scott Strange and Peter Wilson.

Zunic plays his third event on the Japan Tour courtesy of his New Zealand Open win and will be keen to improve on two missed cuts.

With status on only the PGA Tour of Australasia the Wollongong native needs to make the most of his playing opportunities and a good finish this week would give him confidence for the last half of the year.

Kennedy, Bland and Hendry are all enjoying good seasons to be in the top-10 on the money list while Scott Strange is also in good form and sits 12th.

Won Joon Lee is the pick of the rookies at 36th while Matt Griffin is yet to find his feet having made   just two cuts in six starts.
