The PGA Tour of Australasia has arrived in New Caledonia for the South Pacific Open Championship to be played at Tina Golf Course from 30 September to 3October.
The PGA Tour of Australasia has arrived in New Caledonia for the South Pacific Open Championship to be played at Tina Golf Course from 30 September to 3October.
After Australia and New Zealand, New Caledonia is the third
country the PGA Tour of Australasia has visited in the 2015 season.
Making a return to the South Pacific Open is defending
champion Adam Stephens. He blitzed the field last year to win his first title
on Tour by five shots.
2013 runner-up Michael Wright will also play this week in
what will be his fourth appearance at the South Pacific Open. Familiar with the
layout, Wright he holds the course record on the par-71 layout at 9-under 62.
On the other end of the spectrum, James Nitties who plies
his trade on the Web.com Tour is playing the tournament for the first time.
He is joined by Stephen Leaney, another first time player at
the South Pacific Open. Leaney brings a wealth of experience to the field; he
has 13 Professional victories to his name including four on the European Tour.
One of the most popular tournaments for the young players on
Tour, the South Pacific Open provides an opportunity for them to secure break
through wins.
Three out of the past four South Pacific Open titles have
been won by rising stars of the Tour, with it becoming their first victory.
2011 saw Matthew Griffin take the top honour, he has since
gone on to win a further four titles including three in Korea. He now competes
full time on the Japan Golf Tour.
Brad Shilton, secured an emotional win in 2012 and continues
to compete on the PGA Tour of Australasia. He is again teeing it up this week.
2013 saw Tour veterans Andre Stolz and Michael Wright
battling it out for the title over a five hole playoff. Stolz eventually
emerged the victor.
Rounding out the first time winners is Adam Stephens the
defending champion.
This year even more in on the line, the champion is
guaranteed a start in the AU$1.125million Fiji International as well as the PGA
Tour of Australasia’s Triple Crown.
