World Number 1 Jason Day backed up his opening round 67 with a 2-under 69 in round two of the RBC Heritage to co-lead the tournament with Kevin Chappell and Charley Hoffman on 6-under the card.
In his fifth appearance in the RBC Heritage, Day recorded six birdies in the second round but bogeyed the par-5 5th hole after hitting his tee shot out of bounds followed by the par-3 17th hole.
"I had two blemishes on the scorecard. The out-of-bounds on 5, I was just trying to sling a draw around the corner. I got way too far on the inside and got stuck and just plugged it way right, said Day.
"If I hit on my line as I wanted to and intended to I would have gotten down there, and had an iron in my hand probably getting to the green. Sometimes that’s the risk you take, and unfortunately it didn’t work out for me. But I’ll make a better choice hitting off the tee tomorrow."
This is the ninth time Day has held at least a share of the 36-hole lead during his PGA TOUR career. The last two times Day was in this position through 36-holes he went on to claim victory in the 2015 BMW Championship and the 2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
However, it will be Day’s physical and mental strengths he will need call upon after the aftermath of The Masters and the associated pressure that comes with playing a Major.
"I’m a little tired physically and mentally. Last week I felt like I had gone ten rounds of a championship fight."
"I was talking to Brandt Snedeker today about it, he finished T10 with me. It beat us up, it really did, physically and mentally. Coming from a high and you go down to a low, you’ve got to pick yourself back up."
"I may be a little tired, I may be a little bit mentally fatigued, but it’s not an excuse. I need to get out there and get the shots and focus."
Day, who is the first World Number 1 Professional to play the RBC Heritage since 2012, will be seeking his third win of the season and his third in four starts.
A victory this week would move Day ahead of Adam Scott and into the lead of the FedExCup standings.
