Matthew Millar has held off all contenders to taking out the 2016 JRT/TAG Yeppoon Golf Classic.

Millar finished with a four round total of 26-under to finish two shots ahead of Darren Beck, who shot 24-under to finish second.

Starting the final round with a two shot lead, Millar made an early bogey at the third, but it didn’t faze the 39-year-old. With three birdies coming over the next six holes, his two shot margin was again intact as he headed to the 10th tee.

It would be Beck though that would make an early charge on the back-9 with four consecutive birdies from the 10th, Beck saw himself only one shot behind.

Not to be outdone, Millar made birdie at 12 and again at 13, to give him the narrowest of margins, however a bogey at the par-3, 16th hole opened the door for Beck with only two holes remaining. The door didn’t remain open for long, a birdie at 17 and again at 18, secured an emphatic two shot win for Millar.

"It’s great to win this tournament. The team at Yeppoon Golf Club really know how to put on a class event and this year has certainly been no different," said Millar.

"Darren and I battled hard throughout the day and it really only come down to a few putts here or there that proved to be the difference. Darren played great all week and it’s good to see his name around the top of the leaderboard."

"I am going to take away plenty of positives this week. I wedged it well and made clutch putts when I really needed them, and I guess that’s what you need to do to win."

"This has been a great lead in event for the NT PGA Championship, so hopefully I can replicate my form in Palmerston in a week’s time."

While the men were battling it out for the overall prize, Katelyn Must and Alexandra Orchard were in a fight to claim the ladies purse.

Holding a comfortable margin heading into the final round, Must signed for a disappointing 76. Fortunately for Must, Orchard was unable to make up any of the overnight deficit also signed for a 76 and giving Must a six shot win in the inaugural ladies event.   

Many of the Professionals will remain in Central Queensland for a few days as the PGA Pro-Am Series rolls into Boyne Island on Monday for the Purcell’s Engineering/Capri Wholesale Boyne Island Pro-Am.
