Houston happy hunting ground for Aussies

There are good vibes aplenty for the Australian contingent teeing up this week in the final PGA TOUR event before the Masters.

There are good vibes aplenty for the Australian contingent teeing up this week in the final PGA TOUR event before the Masters.

""Of the 10 Australians taking their place in the field at the Golf Club of Houston no less than four are former winners.

Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Matt Jones and Adam Scott have all lifted the trophy at one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments on the PGA TOUR, Appleby managing the feat twice.

Australians have fared well in Houston dating back to Bruce Devlin’s win in 1972 with Bruce Crampton making it an Australian double the following year then claiming the title again in 1975.

David Graham is also a past champion, his five stroke victory coming in 1983.

But with five wins since 1999, Australians of the modern era have found the tournament particularly fruitful, especially since it moved to the Golf Club of Houston in 2006.

Stuart Appleby won the tournament that first year having also prevailed at the famed The Woodlands Golf Club in 1999.

Robert Allenby’s 2000 win also came at The Woodlands but Adam Scott and Matt Jones both claimed their victories at the current venue, Scott in 2007 and Jones in 2014.

The stakes are high this week for all the players not already qualified for the Masters, the Houston Open offering the last available avenue to Augusta for a winner not otherwise in the field.

Matt Jones played his way to Augusta with his memorable 2014 playoff win over Matt Kuchar and having since lost full playing status would love to repeat that feat this week.

Jones has earned just six starts since the beginning of the new season late last year and has missed half his cuts, including at last week’s Puerto Rico Open.

However, his golf has been far from poor with just one over par score in the 18 rounds he has played and two of his three missed cuts coming by a single stroke.

While Jones has been searching for form for much of the past two seasons it has been a significantly longer drought for Robert Allenby who showed signs of life at last week’s Web.com Tour event in Louisiana.

It was at this event in 2000 that Allenby claimed the first of his four PGA TOUR victories and while he has missed the cut each of the past four years will bring renewed confidence to the tee this week.

The multiple PGA Tour of Australasia winner posted 22 birdies in Louisiana and finished high in the Greens in Regulation category on his way to a T5 finish.

It was Allenby’s first top 10 in the US since 2013 and while he has a long road to travel to get back to his best, it was an encouraging week.

This week also sees the return of Adam Scott after a three week break following the WGC Mexico Championship.

The 36-year-old is yet to find his best form in 2017 but with the Masters coming up next week will be highly motivated for a good showing in Houston.

It has been six years since Scott last teed up at the Golf Club of Houston but he has committed to a new regime in preparing for the majors in 2017 including playing a tournament the week before each one.

His last finish here in 2010 was T14 and while he will undoubtedly be trying to win, his main focus will be on getting his game sharp in readiness for the year’s first major.

Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby, Greg Chalmers, Steven Bowditch, Aaron Baddeley, John Senden and Cameron Smith round out the Australians with Cameron Percy listed as third alternate for the week.
