Former World Number 1 Jason Day has gone down in a playoff to U.S.A’s Billy Horschel at the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament on the PGA TOUR today.
Both Day and Horschel had the chance to seal a win in regulation play with scores tied at 12-under par approaching the 18th.
Par for the pair forced a playoff where Horschel would eventually make par again, Day had the chance to force a second playoff hole but would eventually 3 putt the 18th and hand the victory to Horschel.
Day shot 2-under 68, one shot better than eventual winner Horschel in the final round, however a disappointing bogey on the par 4 12th hole, where he made par in the three rounds prior, pegged him back to an equal finish at the end of 72 holes.
It was a disappointing end for the Queenslander after he lit up the TPC Four Seasons Resort course during round three when he scored five birdies in a row on his way to a round of 7-under 63, the best score of the tournament.
While he will be disappointed to have missed a short putt at the first extra hole, overall he will be very happy with his performance ahead of the coming stretch of major events over the northern summer.
Marc Leishman quietly found some form at the TPC Four Seasons, the Victorian has struggled with his game since winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March but played solid golf all week in Texas despite statistically poor putting.
Leishman lost an average of almost a shot and a half per day to the field on the greens but still finished T13 at 6-under for the week.
19 birdies for the week suggest Leishman’s game is in good shape, his play this week similar to his form ahead of his win in March.
In the lead-up to his victory in Florida he produced a series of top 30 finishes built around making strings of birdies off set by clumsy mistakes, a pattern that was on display again this week.
Leishman and Day were the standout performers among the Australians in Texas with only five of the 10 who began the week making the cut.
Rod Pampling was next best after Leishman at T59 with Geoff Ogilvy (T61) and Greg Chalmers (72nd) the others to play the weekend.
Cameron Percy and Matt Jones both missed the cut by a single stroke while Stuart Appleby, Brett Drewitt and Steven Bowditch were well outside the mark.
Jones will be particularly disappointed with his finish after driving in the water at his last hole of the second round and making a bogey that cost him the chance to play the weekend.
