At the completion of this week’s Portugal Masters at the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Portugal, the top 110 players on the Race to Dubai rankings will advance to the first event of the finals series, the Turkish Airlines Open.

More importantly, they will keep their cards for 2020.

An affiliate European Tour member having accumulated the required prize money in 14 starts thus far, Lee enters this week on a sponsor’s invitation and sitting 110th on the Order of Merit.

Given that Americans Tony Finau, Billy Horschel and Aaron Wise are also within the top 110 at present Lee could finish as low as 113th and still earn a full European Tour card for next year but the 21-year-old will be focused on a strong week to leave nothing to chance.

If he needs inspiration Lee doesn’t have to look far afield.

Victorian Lucas Herbert played his way into the Race to Dubai finals series and secured his card for 2019 when he finished runner-up to England’s Tom Lewis 12 months ago.

Not in the field this week, Herbert’s current position of 98th on the moneylist should be enough to secure his safe passage to the Turkish Airlines Open where he can push for a spot in the top 60 who advance to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The remaining Australians in the field this week are unlikely to retain their card for 2020 with Jake McLeod (159th), Sam Brazel (163rd), Dimi Papadatos (169th), Deyen Lawson (186th) and Nick Cullen (202nd) needing a win to make a major move.

Kiwi Ryan Fox is safely through to the finals and is joined in Portugal this week by fellow New Zealander Michael Campbell.
