Voke’s hot form continues in Korea

New Zealand rookie Nick Voke has recorded a third consecutive top-five finish, ending the Asian Tour’s 34th Shinhan Donghae Open in Korea in outright third position.

New Zealand rookie Nick Voke has recorded a third consecutive top-five finish, ending the Asian Tour’s 34th Shinhan Donghae Open in Korea in outright third position.

""It was a superb week also for Aussie Travis Smyth who took advantage of snaring one of the final positions in the field to run seventh and in the process earn an invite to the rich Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup this week in Japan, a co-sanctioned event with the Japan Golf Tour.

Registering the first win of his professional career on the PGA Tour-China tour last week, Voke was on 59 watch after his eighth birdie of the final round on the 14th hole on Sunday but his charge faltered at the very next with a bogey followed by another dropped shot at the 17th.

There were no such stumbles for wire-to-wire winner Sanghyun Park. The South Korean went on a birdie blitz in the final round with an incredible display of iron play, hunting pins on almost every hole and making miraculous saves with his short game to win by five shots.

Tied for 14th at the Royal Cup in Thailand, the final round 70 saw Smyth record his first top-10 result on the Asian Tour and move up from 66th to 52nd on the Habitat for Humanity standings.

“I’m looking to try to keep my card for next year. I’ll be playing in the next few events. It’s certainly one step in the correct direction,” said Smyth, who after turning 1-over made three birdies on the back nine before dropping a shot on the last.

“I’m back to where I want my game. The crowd is awesome and the course is great so I’m really looking forward to coming back.

“My coach (John Serhan) is going to accompany me next week, so I hope that I’ll have a week that is as great as this was.”

The 23-year-old managed to hit just 50 percent of the Bear’s Best fairways at Cheongna Golf Club but conceded that the hot form of those at the top of the leaderboard would have made it difficult to make many inroads anyway.

“Today was a little bit shaky off the tee,” Smyth admitted.

“Other days I was finding a lot of fairways so I was just mad at myself.

“It would have helped my score a lot.

“But it wasn’t meant to be as the leaders’ scores are very low anyway.”

Korean PGA regular Junseok Lee closed with a 5-under par round of 66 to finish tied for 19th while Perth amateur Minwoo Lee had a disappointing final day, a 3-over 74 seeing him finish in a tie for 37th in another step towards the start of his professional career.

Newcastle’s Jake Higginbottom had 73 on Sunday to finish tied for 47th while Jarryd Felton endured a tough weekend to be 73rd.
