World number one Tiger Woods wants to return to Melbourne for the World Cup of Golf in November.

Woods, 37, clinched his fourth win of 2013 and 78th PGA Tour victory at The Players Championship on Sunday.

With the World Cup to be played in Australia for the first time since 1988, Woods could represent the United States at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

"I think it’s a fantastic course, composite course that we play. It’s one of the best in the world. I’ve loved playing there," Woods said.

"I’ve played two President’s Cups there now and I’ve enjoyed it, whether it’s hot and with all the flies or it’s cold and rainy. It’s a great test.

"Golf courses don’t have to be long to be tricky and difficult, and that’s a classic course."

Asked if he would return for the event on November 21, Woods said: "I would like to go."

Woods helped the US win the President’s Cup in 2011, while he was crowned the 2009 Australian Masters champion.

Adam Scott is expected to play at the World Cup the week after defending his Australian Masters title.
