Peter Wilson
and Richard Backwell hold commanding leads in their respective categories in
the SIFA Samoa Open and SIFA Samoa Senior Open.
Wilson holds
a three shot lead after opening rounds of 64 & 69, while in the Legends tournament
Backwell holds a four stroke lead after consecutive rounds of 69.
Having won
the tournament in 2011, Wilson has an even deeper connection to the country
after he visited Samoa twice in 2009 as a volunteer to help rebuild s small
resort in the Tafitoala village that was devastated by a tsunami in 2009.
"I love
coming to Samoa, and I always seem to play well here. On my last trip I was painting
and repairing some beach bales. This is a very different trip but I’m feeling
confident and looking forward to tomorrow," said Wilson.
Wilson will
have to contend with multiple PGA Tour of Australasia winner Andre Stoltz who
is only three shots back after shooting the low round of the day, a 9-under 63.
Stolz opened
the tournament with an even par round to sit at 9-under for the tournament.
"I didn’t hit
driver at all today, It can be a tricky course but I feel I’m hitting it well,"
said Stolz, who has been absent from Tour golf due to an injury.
"Yesterday I
just didn’t finish off my round but I’m happy to be close enough to compete."
Also tied for
second is New South Welshman Andrew Campbell with rounds of 67 & 68.
In the Senior
Samoa Open, Backwell looks set to make it three consecutive titles, holding a
four stroke lead over Steve Aisbett.
When talking
of his round Backwell recollects, "I was 2-over early. The front nine is tough
but I got it going after that."
"I feel good
and looking forward to the challenge tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be nervous but
that’s what playing golf is all about."
The final
round of the SIFA Samoa Open and SIFA Samoa Senior Open will tee off from
9:30am with the leaders teeing off at 11:30am.
