Lucien Tinkler has taken out the Bartons/BMD QLD Senior PGA Championship at Wynnum Golf Club in a playoff over fellow Victorian Tim Elliott, both carding a two-round total of 3-under par.
With $30,000 in prize money on the line and a chance to win a state championship, there was plenty to play for in the final round.
Starting the day one shot behind overnight leaders Greg Carroll and Stephen Hutchison, both Tinkler and Elliott were 1-over early in their second rounds before building momentum on the back-9, Tinkler birdieing his final hole to force a playoff.
With a significant gallery hanging off the balcony for the playoff on Wynnum Golf Club’s first hole, it was Tinkler who found the fairway putting pressure on Elliott.
Elliott’s drive however found the left trees and an extraordinary recovery to the front edge of the green left a tricky up and down to save par.
Tinkler’s pitch finished 20-feet from the flag and although a valiant effort, his birdie attempt slid by the high side for an easy par.
Elliott’s putt from off the fringe left him a seven-foot putt for par to force another playoff hole, and when his putt grazed the left edge, it would be Tinkler lifting the QLD Senior PGA Championship trophy.
Tinkler commented on having his name etched on the trophy alongside the likes of Rodger Davis, Ossie Moore, Michael Harwood and David Merriman.
“I feel really honoured to win given the names on the trophy already and I am grateful of the Wynnum Golf Club’s commitment to host the event,” said Tinkler.
“I was really close to the late Ian Stanley and his passing over recent months has really affected me. Though to have a mutual friend on the bag today was really fitting so to get it done together is quite special."
For Elliott, it was close but not quite close enough.
“I was actually quite surprised I was in a playoff, I thought someone may have gone one or two lower,” said Elliot.
“You always have to think you are going to win a playoff when it is just you and one other so yes, I am a little disappointed though congratulations to Lucien for a great couple of rounds in tricky conditions."
