In honour of Mothers Day we take a look at a few Professionals whose mothers have been influential in their careers.
Our two-time Open Champion might never have taken up golf if it wasn’t for his Mother. A late bloomer in the game, Norman began playing golf at 15 after caddying for his Mum, Toini. Norman felt certain that he too could play to the level of his mother, not to mention hold her single-figure handicap. When Norman hit his first ball he was hooked and gradually started to fall in love with the technical side of the game. Within eighteen months Norman went from a 27 handicap to scratch and went on to become the world’s number one ranked Professional in the 1980s and 1990s.
Rachel Hetherington first started playing golf at the age of 14 and went on to become one of Australia’s most famous female Professionals. The eight-time LPGA Champion and a mum herself to three-year-old daughter Annie, credits her Mother as one of the key influences in her career. The dual Australian Ladies Professional Golf and PGA of Australia Member made a triumphant return to tournament play this year on the ALPG Tour, which included a T4 finish at the Oates Victorian Open.
The 2015 Panama Claro Championship winner is the son of Lindy Goggin, Tasmania’s greatest ever female golfer. Goggin played off scratch from the age of 20 and in 1976 was the lowest handicapped female golfer in the world. She secured victories at the Australian Ladies Championship in 1971, 1977 and 1980; together with four Victorian Amateur Championships. These successes lead to Australian selection for the 1978 Espirito World Championship, a tournament the Australian team when on to win. When Mathew was growing up his entire family played golf, so it’s not surprising that these influences inspired him to become a Professional.
Selling the family home so your son can attend a golf academy is quite a sacrifice, but that’s exactly what Dening Day did in order for her son to follow his dream. Since turning professional in 2006, Day has become one of the most exciting players on the PGA TOUR winning the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open, 2014 World Golf Championships Match Play, 2013 World Cup of Golf and 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship.
