Teeing up at Sectional Qualifying at Brookside Golf andCountry Club and The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Columbus Ohio the 21year-old survived the longest day in golf.
Smith fired 3-under 69 across his first 18 holes to ensurehe was in the mix amongst a field which included the likes of Nick Watney,Kevin Streelman and Steve Stricker.
Playing steady golf it was on the back-9 of his second 18for the day that Smith really turned up the heat on his game.
A birdie on the par-4 13th was just a taste ofthings to come; Smith went onto fire three consecutive birdies on the 15th,16th and 17th holes to finish the round on 5-under 67.
A two round total of 8-under the card saw Smith finish tied7th and seal his place at Chambers Bay for the 115th USOpen.
This will be Smith’s debut in the Majors and while it willbe golf on a totally new scale for the Queenslander who has spent 2015 competingon the PGA TOUR thanks to sponsors invites.
Also qualifying through Smith’s venue were Ryo Ishikawa, BoVan Pelt, Camilo Villegas, D.A Points, Robert Streb, Danny Lee, Michael Putnam,Sam Saunders, David Hearn, Bryson Dechambeau (am), Sebastian Cappelen, Daniel Summerhays,George McNeill and Brad Fritsch.
Not fairing the same fate as Smith was fellow QueenslanderRod Pampling. An extremely costly double bogey on the 18th atNorthwood Club in Texas saw him drop from inside the qualifying number to justone short of a place in the year’s second Major.
With the addition of Smith to the US Open field Australiahas eight representatives including Kurt Barnes, Jason Day, Marcus Fraser, MarcLeishman, Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott and John Senden.
