Eight Australasians will have a chance at major glory on the over 50’s circuit this week when the Senior Open Championship tees off at Sunningdale in England.
Richard Backwell and Glenn Joyner added
their names to the starting list when they survived final qualifying earlier in
the week joining Australians Peter Fowler, Peter Senior, Peter O’Malley and
Mike Harwood as well as New Zealanders Grant Waite and Greg Turner.
The Senior Open is one of five majors on
the US Champions Tour and sees some of the biggest names in the game make the
trip across the pond.
It also represents Australia’s best chance
of claiming one of the big five, Peter Fowler and Peter Senior in particular
likely contenders.
Fowler is in the midst of a golden year
with two wins in Europe already and after a good US Open campaign recently will
no doubt like his chances on home soil.
Senior, too, has shown flashes of form this
year though injuries have taken their toll on his consistency.
Newcomer Peter O’Malley has quickly settled
quickly life on the Senior circuit with a T11 and T23 in his first two starts.
He will be familiar with the Sunningdale
layout from his years playing the European Tour and will be one to watch as the
week unfolds.
Mike Harwood isn’t having his best season
in 2015 but comes into the week off his best finish of the year, an outright
fifth placing two weeks ago in Switzerland.
